And I'll say another thing, you can have a crappy school, and still get a good education from it if the student shows a desire to learn, and has his/her parents supporting and encouraging them.

Emphasis mine. Can is a pretty big modifier there... your statement is true in essence but it does nothing to say how feasible or difficult it will be to still get that good education. I am guessing that there are a fair number of poorly educated people in the world who had the desire to learn and supportive parents that just didn't get the education.

Sure, a 6'2" white guy like myself can play professional basketball, there have been quite a few that have done it. In order for it to have worked for me however, I would have had to have had the desire, several innate basketball skills, some bit of luck, decent coaching and thousands of hours of practice. And even if I had had all of those things, there is nothing guaranteeing that I would have made the NBA.

When a school sucks, the frustrated teachers, will seek out those who want to learn and they'll do their best to at least give the interested students an education. Throw in a couple of involved parents and you'll surprised what you get.

I think you more often will find that a crappy school will drive off the good teachers, leaving the children with the bad teachers..

I think with good parenting, a reasonably smart kid can succeed no matter how bad of a school system they attend, and with bad parenting a reasonable smart kid can succeed in a bad school system. But let's face reality it probably runs like;

Good Parents, Smart Kid, Good School = 90% chance of a positive
Good Parents, Smart Kid, Bad School = 80% chance of a positive
Bad Parents, Smart Kid, Bad School = 70% chance of a positive
Good Parents, Average Kid, Good School = 60% chance of a positive
Good Parents, Average Kid, Bad School = 50% chance of a positive
Bad Parents, Average Kid, Bad School = 40% chance of a positive
Good Parents, Dumb Kid, Good School = 30% chance of a positive
Good Parents, Dumb Kid, Bad School = 20% chance of a positive
Bad Parents, Dumb Kid, Bad School = 10% chance of a positive

I think parenting counts for as much if not more than the school system does.

You don't even know the meaning of bad schools until you come to Alabama. Want to know how many foreign languages we have? ONE, fucking Spanish, and I have a friend who speaks Spanish (her family is Mexican, so she has grown up around it), and she says that most of the time the teacher isn't even teaching it right. She can't understand half the shit she says and she often turns sentences around or mispronounces words. Needless to say, I didn't learn much \ make very good grades in that class.

My school is very lucky compared to most around here though, we do have some teachers who genuinely CARE if we learn or not. My Chemistry teacher comes an hour early, and stays after as long as she needs in order to work with people struggling in class, give makeup tests, or even just talk if you need it. But other than her and a 3 or 4 others, most of the teachers are absolute shit.
