Effective EQ leadership in a nutshell

Post by Adex_Xeda »

You know I bumped into this post the other day and it pretty much sums up the learned factor of playing EQ.

Kreugen was addressing some other issue, but the meat of his statement was notable.

Kudos of conciseness to Kreugen
Kreugen wrote: Obviously when Firestarter quit FoH for another "competing" guild she found out that the grass was in fact not greener!

What people who haven't had the blessing of being in a position of leadership don't know is that yes, a vast majority of you are in fact worthless fucking sacks of shit who are out only for yourselves. And after the years go on and we get more and more jaded it becomes harder to prove yourselves to us otherwise. Of course, in FoH, we spread the loot around to everybody anyway, so we don't make it so obvious who it is we trust or even like. We try to be as fair as we can be, but nobody seems to believe that until they see the other side of things. You either rule with an iron fist or you and your guild become overrun by the greedy selfish shitheads of the world. And obviously, Firelystarter just learned exactly that.

We didn't set foot in time for over a month to flag recruits when our average raid of 40 wasn't quite hacking it for VZ. So the recruit bit was somebody else.

As far as the cleric thing, well, I'm pretty sure we spread the abuse around equally. It takes a special kind of person to play a cleric for a long time - apparently a very rare person. The vast majority of our clerics are played by our melee. Sadly it works just fine. The thing is, you can't just be complacent about losing. "Oh well dudes, we suck, better luck next week!" Fuck that. Pick a random person and blame his ass if you have to, but make it clear to everyone that somebody or everybody fucked up and if we just do the shit right we'll win THIS time. Over time it keeps people from slacking off, because nobody wants to be the idiot. Everyone should feel responsible for every victory and every failure, but in a lot of cases, the clerics are the only ones who can win or lose a battle and thus the only source of blame.
Does this strike a cord with any of you retired types?

If someone dies, a cleric didn't heal them. Cleric's fault.

If Cleric was stunned .. clerics fault for not having resist up.
I
If Cleric was feared, sae thing.

Cleric complete healing a tank and caster dies during the cast, Clerics fault, should have healed tank sooner.

Rouge breaks Enchanter Mezz and enchanter dies, clerics fault, should have known the rogue is an asshole and been doing quick heal rotations on the enchanter expecting this to occur.

If kazad peters out in the middle of a raid and Wizard dies while overblasting .. Clerics fault for not having ultra extended Symbol and for not chain casting Holy Light on Wizard knowing wizzie would be blasting for 7K.

If Paladin runs out of stat food and gets diseased because he lost the +5 disease stat on his Misty Thicket Picnic its the Cleric's fault. Clerics should have all the food available.

If bard pulls two minuntes after a wipe and clerics are oom from rebuffing .. clerics fault, we should have nver died in the first place and its all your fault so I'm pulling and there is nothing you can do about it.
HEAL HEAL HEAL!

If raid is successful, good job all!

Oh! That was when Kreugen (mindlessly following the direction of his unintelligent leader) thought some thread created by Firestarter was me when it really wasn't. Innane rant ensued and we all had a good laugh.

I thought a played a druid anyway!

Eh? What started this tangent?
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Hmmm loot whore? How the hell? CD's loot is DKP. You either have the points to get loot or you dont. And to get the points, you have to show up to raids, so your point makes no sense. :?

It reminds me why I finally decided in the end not to buy EQ again and start up a cleric like I wanted to. It's too easy, and much too common, for clerics to be dual boxed that it's a wonder to me how full-time clerics ever find groups. Other than that, yeah, guild leaders need to be diplomatic which means not telling someone how badly they suck goats ass.

Yikes, that was vague

Allow me to clarify,

How do you bind together a bunch of potientially self-centered people to work together towards a goal?

I think there's a solution in the method Kreugen mentioned.

Scratch the cleric stuff, I pasted too much text.

Who me?

Nah I was not a loot whore, I was the guy playing 4 accounts because if the run did not have loot for some classes people would not play, I was playing Xzion and myself to do CoH sets, I was the one dying multiple times setting up CoH runs in places like Western wastes because half of CT was too dumb fuck to run across any zone in the game without dying and being unable to get a damn loc before they did, I was the guy sitting with finger poised over the CoH button for hours while healing another group on a second keyboard and translating Xanupox's "osaiuflisd" as "CoH me now"

Calling me a loot whore is like calling a 1999 era Ranger a tank. Loot whores were those people that decided to be an enchanter 3 years into the game, not those of us who started and played a mage from 1 - 60 in 3 weeks because all our guild mages took a vacation.

DOH you all got me, lamerz :-)

It's true. I admit it. I let people die all the time because there was some nice Titty on Cinemax. Just ask Revs. I'd turn back to the screen and see nothing but corpses and text reading "DAMNIT DOHRUM HEAL ME"!
