That damned liberal media
Why does Fox News hate America? Pentagon classifies Fox News report and orders employees to not read it. This is hysterical in a "crying on the inside" sort of way.

So are governments no longer allowed to keep classified documents?
The news brief stated that the report was leaked to Time by an anonymous source. If that information was, in fact, classified and the pentagon was in the midst of an internal investigation into the matter at the time of it's being leaked, how is this beyond the bounds of a reasonable request on the part of the pentagon to maintain the classification of the documents pending their completion of their investigation and/or prosecution?
Maybe it was a cover-up, maybe not, but either way, I think the issue would boil down to whether or not the government can and should maintain the classification of documents and if leaked, have a reasonable chance to prosecute the individuals that are responsible for it.

Pah - the Taguba report was not initially leaked to Time (it was leaked to Fox)...what I think you're referring to is the email instructing personnel not to read the report on Fox news - that was leaked to Time.
There are different reports from various media agencies, but it appears that the Taguba report (though considered to be confidential) was perhaps not considered to be classified until after its already being made public.
This would be in violation of Executive Order 13292, which states that "In no case shall information be classified in order to: (1) conceal violations of law, inefficiency, or administrative error; (2) prevent embarrassment to a person, organization, or agency."
I will agree, though, that the "don't go read that!" memo that the Pentagon sent out isn't as entirely silly as it would at first seem. "Classified," after all, does not always equal "secret."
