Need some tech advice for new PC pls

Post by Reikage »

Hi guys, Im about to get a new PC and Im just wondering if this set up would be good enough to enable me to turn on some Luclin models during a raid, and also reduce some of the video lag in Bazaar. Also, Id like to know if there would be any hardward conflicts between the Videocard and EQ (if there is even such a thing =p )

AMD Athlon XP2000 266mhz
ASUStek A7V333 VIA KT333CE mainboard ATA133/USB2.0
512 DDR333 ram
OEM Geforce4 Ti4400 128mb

Would this be good enough? Any advice on how i can further optimize?

Thanks for reading =)

Kyoukan is too much of a dumbass to know that the 266MHZ on an AMD is not the processor speed, just ignore it.

With my new system ( code named Evocation)
Pentium4 2.53GHZ
Geforce4 4600 128MEG
1 GIG DDR400(PC3500)RAM

I still get a slowdown in Bazaar, however I have models all on all the time and spell effects are cool too. I have no lag issues on raids however I do tend to turn off opacity now and used to showspell off on raids.

That should run quite well in pretty much everywhere in EQ, however you will still slow down in the bazaar a bit. Unless you have access to the NASA mainframe or a couple of Cray's running in parallel, nothing will run in the bazaar perfectly.

If it makes you feel any better (i think the 266 you were referring to was the FSB) the processor in question is 2x as fast as my current chip. I'm running an old slot AMD 700mhz with a GF 2 GTS 64mb and 256 mb of ram. The only limitation i have faced is slow loading with new models...instead I just choose old models with velious graphics (like betta anyway). Everything runs like a dream and a crash or freeze is a once every 3 month issue.

I suppose the answer to your question is what you're looking for. If you are going to constantly be on 60+ person raids with spell effects on and all new models, then you might want to look into the new high-end pentiums with a billion meg FSB etc etc. If you just want solid performance at a reasonable price...what you proposed is just fine.

BTW my 2nd computer is a 266mhz with a GF2 32mb and 196 ram and it runs fine everywhere outside of luclin. (spell effects off naturally). A hot rod computer is what it takes to make everquest do all it's capable of, but not necessary to play. Hi i'm not sober but i hope that helped.
Don't blame me if you see my old characters acting like asses.

That is a pretty screaming machine. Might want to try for 1GHZ RAM though if there is enough left in your budget :)

I'm actually getting a new pc w/in the next two weeks.
Is there any determinable difference between a 2.4 and a 2.53 ghz machine? It's $60 more for the latter and was curious if it was worth it.

Short answer is no. Save 60.00 unless money is no object and you want a 3 percent increase in FPS. That 60.00 is better spent on buying a better video card, more memory or toilet paper.

I'll keep the toilet paper thing in mind. As far as the video card goes, it's going to be an ATI 9700 Pro.

Dell is asking $380 to upgrade from 512 megs to a gig of memory (PC800 RDRAM, whatever that means) so it may be a wee bit too much to upgrade that slot.
