The Daily Show
My question for you all is this: What do you think of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart? Are you a fan or do you hate it? Do you think it gives us a representation of what's going on underneath the humor, or do you think it's a stupid waste of time? Do you find yourself watching it more for news rather than regular news outlets? I've divided the poll along liberal/conservative standpoints. Don't flame the poll, it's my first. Discussion welcome.
I'm using the Daily Show in my political science class for a debate on whether or not people actually use the show for news reporting. I would appreciate honest responses. Are you liberal/conservative, and do you like/dislike the show? Thanks everyone.

It's brilliant. It's highly liberal of course, so I expect a good many people here might not like it, but I think it's comic genius. I get my news from 2 sources. Yahoo and the Daily Show. Ok, 3 sources, VV too
. I think Stewarts reactions to the dumb shit people do (man, woman, liberal, republican, american, other) are just priceless.
I'm liberal btw (in case you didn't know!)

The Daily Show had the most balanced news I ever saw in the US, for one reason.. they didn't really care who got them a laugh, as long as they did.
I don't think it was a particularly factual news service, but I do think it was probably the most unbiased in the country, AND they managed to cover some foreign news as well. All that, humour, and an interview all in an hour =p
Oh, and I can't vote in your poll because I don't stuff myself in your narrow liberal/conservative/whatever my daddy was groups.

In my mind, this show has a legitimate niche within the jounalistic ecosystem. There has historically always been a place for satirical editorials of current events. This forum can take liberties and express opinions that ideally shouldn't be present in fact-based journalism.
I think that Jon Stewart is sometimes incredibly funny and sometimes he is a bit weak.
This isn't a bad (American) equivalent to the "Have I Got News for You" show in the UK (which used to be the best show evah). It was a shame when they lost Angus Deayton.

I find he cracks me up a lot more often than not. Some people tag the show as liberal right now but he takes his shots at everybody: its just the current US President is a Republican so it provides more opportunity to poke fun at the Republicans. Sorta like SNL when Dana Carvey did his George Sr bits vs Phil Hartman's Clinton.

The Daily Show is probably the most honest news show (if you want to call it that) on the air at the moment. Political spin doctors are taking its existance very seriously, as shown by the Dems and Republicans both sending people to be interviewed during the presidential races and the 9/11 hearings. It is capable of showing through satire things other news agencies can't dream of saying. While it definitely has a liberal slant in many cases, that as much to do with the fact that the current ruling party of the US being the neocons (they were pretty vicious towards Slick Willy while he was in the office) as it does with the natural liberal nature of comedians. They slam anyone who says or does something extremely stupid, its just that the neocons are cornering the market on that commodity lately. Their jabs at Fox news are just priceless.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I appreciate the replies so far everyone.
Zaelath, my class is currently defining what makes up a liberal/conservative, and these are the classifications that we were given to work with. Because of this, I had to define my poll in those viewpoints. I know not everyone would classify themselves as these, but I work with what I'm given.

I'm sure I'll come under fire for this, but I don't really consider it a liberal show at all. They told just as many and just as harsh jokes during the Clinton administration, but the show was just less popular then, and it didn't really come into it's own until John Stewart started hosting.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Didn't Stewart start hosting early in Willy's second term? Regardless, they shoot their barbs at whichever side presents a target.

Wrong. Craig Killborne left Sportscenter back in 1993 to start The Daily Show. He stayed for quite a few seasons before he got the late late show.Asheran Mojomaster wrote:Yeah, the guy before him was only in for like a season or so I think.masteen wrote:Didn't Stewart start hosting early in Willy's second term? i think it is a hilarious show.
love how you only let people choose being conservative or liberal. But such is the political climate we live in...
anyway, even though yeah Stewart makes no apologies for his personal political views, he gives the Democrats their fair shair of ribbing.
For instance the Democratic Primary coverage was tagged "Race from the White House", which is pretty good =).

Daily show is the best program on TV right now. I highly recommend going over to http://www.comedycentral.com and watching some clips. Scroll down to the latest "Back in Black" clip regarding the FCC.
