This week's Georgia shenanigans

Post by kyoukan »

Some parents in Georgia want several pieces of classic literature removed from their local schools' reading list.

Parents with the group Crusaders for Christ recently told the Bartow County Board of Education that several books contain use of God's name in vain and racial slurs. Among the books being protested are To Kill a Mockingbird, The Martian Chronicles, A Raisin in the Sun, and Of Mice and Men.

Pastor Dwight Holcomb of Acworth says the district needs to provide cleaner, less-offensive versions of the books. Holcomb maintains the board members need to listen to the public on this matter.

"How come a board of ten or twelve committed people can determine that this stuff stays in our county school system when we have over 450 signatures of voting citizens ... who elected these people into office and who say that we don't want it?" he asks. "We don't want it." The pastor adds that the number of signatures is growing every day.

Holcomb explains he has no problem with the plots of the books or the stories they tell -- just the language that is used.

"I can tell these same stories and not use my Lord's name in vain and without using all these other words that are not permitted in public," he says. "If they're spoken in public, you will be arrested for the use of profanity."

County committees had deemed all of the contested books appropriate, but committee members will now consider whether to reverse their decision. Holcomb adds that other parents with children in a local middle school are protesting the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
Wow. They want to edit the racial slurs out of To Kill a Mockingbird. That will make it a really poignant book. Fortunately only a small fraction of the population of that state can read anyway. But that's not all.

The X-rated phenomenon of genital piercing came under stealth attack Wednesday when state representatives voted to make the practice illegal for women — but not men.

The ban was a last-minute add-on to a bill outlawing involuntary genital female mutilation, an ancient ritual practiced by some cultures.

Several senators pushed for the Senate bill that was amended in the House after hearing about a 2-year-old girl from Gwinnett County who was taken by her father to have the procedure done. But the bill passed Wednesday goes much further — ending the voluntary, decorative piercings that have been highlighted on HBO specials and in urban subculture.

"The original intent of the amendment was to make illegal the voluntary piercing of female genitalia for decorative purposes," said Rep. Bill Heath (R-Bremen).

Heath said that while some piercings do fall under the category of involuntary genital mutilation, he is fine with banning the voluntary procedures as well. "I just don't think it's appropriate," Heath said.

The bill only regulates female genital piercings. Heath said he doesn't support male genital piercings, but won't draft legislation to address the issue.

Sen. Nadine Thomas (D-Decatur), one of the key backers of the original Senate bill, was incensed about the amendment. She said a bill originally designed to protect women and girls now limits what women can do with their bodies.

"This is just another stone being thrown at women," Thomas said. "What he is doing is diminishing what we are trying to do to protect women and girls. It is gender discrimination."

Wow Janet's boob must have really scared a lot of southern men, seems to be a rash of "morality" bills being passed.

Welp at least it wasn't Texas this time, we had a nice run of stupid things coming out of here the last few months.

Yay Freedom!

I fucking hate the southern ideology. They revel in their ignorance and intolerance. And they're the first to say that Bush "fought for our freedom" against the evil terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. All the while pissing our REAL freedoms down the legislative toilet.

hehe i didnt realize the genital piercing thing applied only to females. i frankly support bans of all kinds on male genital piercing :p.

well i dont necessarily support making it illegal, but i think the places who perform those services should have some sort of legal hygeine standards (like your dentist does for example). i dunno.

as for the group of people in Acworth...you pretty much hit it on the head, this would be a bigger issue if people could actually read.

At any rate, i have no plans on ever sending my children to public school in this state, so thankfully my child won't have to be caught in the crossfire of the race war that Christian zealots are trying to wage all over this country.

people talk about a "Culture War" in the US, and there is one, but only one side is waging it, these fucking freak Christian zealots. put them in the same socioeconomic conditions that are in the 3rd world countries, and they'd be suicide bombers and hijacker farms too. Thankfully, we have enough economic opportunity here, so these people can donate 10% of their income to their local mega church where they can get touched weekly with 15,000 of their closest friends.

but a more realistic answer is that rural Georgia is as backwards as any part of this country. They are lucky they have the regional economic center of Atlanta. Without the revenue that gets disbursed statewide from taxes and economic opportunity, they would be wallowing in the very ditches in which they shat in such lovely cultural centers as Acworth.

"southern ideology" is a minority viewpoint anymore.

Alas, you can have 10 normal people and a nut, and the nut defines an outsider's perception of all 10.

BTW I find it interesting you consider public schools to be in the crossfire over christian ideology.

I know many a christain parent who wanted their kids in private schools to avoid the "crossfire" over secular ideology.

Same motivation, opposite perspective.

(edit damn typos)

Actually, I got pierced in Atlanta. All I have to say about any halfway reputable piercing/tatoo shop, is that they are probably twice as 'sterile' as a doctors office. Onsite autoclave, disenfectant for both the equipment and the jewelry, in addition to topical sterilizers.

Another example of government being where they shouldn't be

Post by Daerib Bittcroaker »

This bill originally started to protect young girls from ritualistic mutilations of their genitalia.

I don't view it as being any different than circumcision or any other quasi-religuos practice performed on kids these days... Though I do think that the person doing it should have some formal certification to be allowed to perform the operation.

There have been cases where young girls have had complications from these rituals that have caused them to be sterilized or otherwise scarred for life from someone using dirty instruments etc to perform the rite.

This is another case of good intention, bad results.

I don't think anyone has a problem with the original intention of the bill.

It seems to me that last minute amendments is getting to be a huge problem down there, is there anything to that? Reading the stuff that got tacked onto the Patriot act 30 seconds before the house voted on it was pretty fucking outrageous.

My sister lived in Florida. Her husband, though he is getting a lot better, still talks about mexicans and black people in totally ignorant ways. At dinner a week before their wedding, with about 20 family members(everyone but him is totally liberal) eating a nice dinner he somehow got to talking about how black people couldnt swim and complaining about how mexicans are taking over Florida.

That same week, my family, having never been to Florida, really wanted to go to a nature area to look for some gators. We drove to this place a local told us about, because he said you could see a lot of gators there. When we got there we found out it was a gator farm. We didnt stay long, but mmy dad was interested in talking to the owner if he knew a nature spot where gators were in the wild.

The owner said there was a animal reserve nearby, but that we shouldnt go there, "Because its full of old jews and rich nigger tourists"...We left pretty quickly =p. I was 9 at the time, and I had nightmares of that gator farm for a month. My god they were treated horribly, and the workers there would throw things at them and hit them hard with these long ass metal poles, because they got a kick out of pissing the gators off.

There are actually some amazing wildlife spots in Florida, but im too scared to go back there because there are so many scary hicks there its just sick.

We got our bible thumpers too.

Few years back the Tampa city council outlawed lap dances, I remember some event that a local station put on giving out free dances or something on the final night of it being legal.

The law now is that you have to be six feet away from the dancer(s). Of course, I don't think any of the clubs follow the law, and it's only the occassional raid that the police bother doing to give them fines for it. I think the main thing behind that was that the council wanted to (and still wants to) piss off Joe Redner. They hate him and he them. I don't go to strip clubs (you want me to pay to be teased? I got cable!) but Joe runs very clean and good quality businesses. From his strip clubs (Mons Venus is world famous), to his gym, to his restaraunts.

But I do agree, we've got some stupid ass people on the city council. But I'm guessing that's true just about anywhere.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - A children's book about a prince whose true love turns out to be another prince will be available only to adults in an elementary school's library, a committee has decided.

The book, called "King & King," will be locked up at Freeman Elementary School in response to complaints by some parents, a school committee ruled Friday in an 8-3 vote.

The parents who initially complained after their first-grader brought home the book say the decision satisfies them. Michael and Tonya Hartsell said they never wanted the book banned.

"It might be appropriate in certain situations," Michael Hartsell said. "But a child of this age shouldn't have a choice."

In the book, a queen tells her single son, Prince Bertie, that she had already been married twice at his age. The prince dismisses a line of eligible princesses before finally falling for Prince Lee. The final page of the book shows the two princes kissing with a red heart covering their lips.

The Hartsells submitted a written complaint about the book to the school Monday, which resulted in a review by the committee of parents, educators and community members. A second couple, Channing and Beth Hatcher, filed a similar complaint Tuesday.

The authors, Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland, of the Netherlands, have said they didn't set out to write a controversial book. School officials have said they didn't intentionally order a book with a gay theme.

One parent on the committee, Heather Stoker, said the book promotes diversity and focuses on love, not homosexuality, she said.

"I feel like it's my responsibility to make it clear that these things exist," she said. "It doesn't mean we have to agree with it. It's not about right or wrong. It's just different."
I say you guys down there just abolish libraries entirely.

I don't think a library in a public school is a place for books about homosexual relationships.

I took my ex to Mons for the first time the very night they passed that ordinance. We arrived just as the cops were finishing up their first "raid." It took about 20 minutes before things got going again, and the girls were fucking WILD that night. Good times :D

Trying to censure textbooks is something both sides are guilty of. Check out this book if you're interested in it, it's a great read (or just read the reviews for a good laugh).
