12 year old bomber

Post by Adex_Xeda »

I read articles like this:
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/408359.html

I always wondered what would motivate kids to blow themselves up.

Sadly it seems they have nothing better to do.

I wonder, if Israel tried to improve the economy inside the Palestinian territory, perhaps people would not be so idle and prone to depressive acts.

Redo the territory, and give them a good port city. Get some trade and services going, maybe setup some manufacturing jobs to produce cheap products for the region. Maybe even make them equal voting members in an Israeli parliment kinda like California in the House of Representatives.

Have they tried stuff like this before?

They'd have to annex the Gaza Strip and probably most of Jerusalem to even get close to appeasing the palestinians.

Jobs and trade won't cut it. This is an emotional uprising based on historical and secular issues.

Rabin was about as good as it's going to get for the stability of the region. Nothing good can come of any economic recovery programs until someone who shared Rabin's plan gets into power in Israel and makes important steps towards establishing a Palestinian state.

Adex, are you really that completely ignorant of the Palestine/Isreal conflict?

Try to imagine thier point of view:

Imagine being driven out of your homes and forced to live in a shithole camp while the "settlers" who displaced you are living in relative comfort.
Imagine running the risk of being shot dead in the street for voicing opposition to the foreigners living in your homes.

Now magnify that hatred over several decades.

And you wonder why these kids have no reservations about martyring themselves?

I don't sympathise or support what they do, but I do understand their motivation.

I disagree. The boy, just like other young kids, was very susceptible to influence. He was promised 70+ virgins and sex in heaven. Boredom wasn't the reason. Religious promises and being bullied in school made him want to prove himself. Did you read the entire article?

Religion, just like marriage, should be kept clear of children until they're 18 to give them a fighting chance.

Ok, that was my quick-post attempt at kick starting a suggestion forum for popping those people out of their endless pattern of killing.

Let me try a more direct approach.

HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?

Miir,

Displaced people that lost territory due to war are common.

We have some in the States if I recall.

I have an idea of the institutionalized resentment taught there.

The fact is regardless of their war losses to Israel, what do you do now?

Revenge politics tend to ocillate forever. How do you break the cycle and stop the meat grinder?

I hear there's a Nobel Prize waiting for whoever figures this out.

Right now the message from Israel is Stop bombing us or we'll clamp down even more.

Well that doesn't do anything to diffuse angry people. Why not compliment fence building with some kind of economic building?

Help people develop a chance at a better life. That seems to me to be a way of reducing resentment.

And the Palestine message is that they will continue to use any means possible to retaliate against the IDF for killing innocent Palestines.

You'd serve yourself well to be wary of any Israeli 'news reports' on what is going on over there. They are just as (if not more) biased than any Arabic based coverage. Keep in mind the Israelis also have the financial means and backing to spin their 'side' of the story a lot more effectively than the Palestines.

It's a shame there's no oil in Israel/Palestine.... this problem would have been solved long ago.

I thoroughly disagree. In fact, I think that is a completely asinine statement.

I admit I was probably a bit dramatic with that statement... but I stand by my assertion that Isreali (as well as Palestine) media is inherently biased in it's reporting of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Adex's original point has some merit.

a huge problem in Palestinian territory is that unemployment is something astronomical like 60%.

most wars are about control of resources, even ones that pit two ethnic groups against one another.

Perhaps it was a subtle polical message suggesting that the powerful must turn their back's on the conflicts of others to maintain the illusion of a uptoian society.
