San Diego(area) or Hawaii

This may not be appropriate to ask here, but I know many people from different parts of the country frequent these boards. My wife and I have come to a point in our lives in which we want to experience a major change in our geographical location. We have been born and raised in Oregon, and ultimately want to settle here in the Northwest. We currently are considering either San Diego County, or Hawaii to move to after this summer. I know a bit about Southern California, but really have little feedback on Hawaii to make an educated decision. I was hoping those who know about either of my two options could post a little feedback about considerations (good, or bad) for either areas.

Hawaii = wicked cost of living last I heard...Have 2 friends who pursued advanced degrees there and it was hideously expensive to live there

I loved Hawaii when I was there for two weeks a couple of years back. Each island is very different from each other though. If you do anything outside of the industry, you'll probably want to live on Oahu.

However, everything is expensive as hell and it's predominantly a service industry catering to the visitors and the military, even on Oahu although less so there. You can own a home there but, usually, you will not own the land.

On the other hand, I would ignore all of that to live in perfect weather all year round like the kind Hawaii gives you with the perfect peace the people and the air exude. Ohh, and not one damn mosquito

I don't know how long you plan on being there, but I know my sister looked in to moving there. One thing that stuck out was that the schools are supposedly pretty bad there. So if you're thinking of having a family there, its really not the best choice... so I hear. Then again, its fuckin Hawaii ;p

So if you move to Hawaii... what island?

If cost of living is a big issue (and it IS high in Hawaii) check out Guam.

We likely plan on staying for 1-2 years. Our plan is to rent an apartment or house (if we have more roomates). She will be working as an RN, and I will likely try to get a job in some sort of fine dining restraunt (or on a fire department, which is highly competitive and unlikely

). Fortunately there is a need for RN's pretty much everywhere, and I would imagine most islands there would have some fine dining restraunts. In all honesty, I have no idea what islands would be most enjoyable to live on. I would love some feedback if people have any ideas.

I lived on Oahu in Hawaii Kei for 6 weeks and moved back because:

a) As said above "wicked cost of living" back in 1995 1 Gallon of Milk = $4.00.
b) Island Sickness in 4-5 weeks. I could drive around the entire island in 2-3 hours.

I dont recommend Hawaii unless yer:

a) Rich
b) Rich
c) Enjoy isolation

Probably has a lot to do with the fact that noone asked the Hawaiians if they wanted to become part of the US. They were a sovereign nation prior, and the US pretty much bought out their queen (I hope I remembered that correctly) There is actually a decent sized political faction in Hawaii to gain independence and leave the Union.

There were a very isolated place with a society all their own, if tons of people move in, it will dillute their culture, which they are very proud of. Makes sense to me, but then again, if I were to move there, I'd be very interested in their culture, and in becoming a part of it.

Regardless, Hawaii is expensive, nearly every good is imported, thus making prices high, as well as a limited supply of land, and a tourist driven economy. You'd better have money.

I can hardly believe that Hawaii's cost of living is really THAT much more than ours here in SD. Highest gas prices in the country, people trying to get recruited but not even taking compensation realizing the cost of living is so high...

A typical 3 bedroom house here costs 500k.

Thanks for the cost of living calculators. It is very helpful. I am uncertain how accurate these are since the two had contradicting outcomes.

Anyone have suggestions as to what cities in Hawaii I should live?

Have you even been to Hawaii?? Not to sound mean but it seems like you've done no research on this idea at all. Unless you have some serious savings account built up, moving from Oregon to either Hawaii or San Diego is going to be an extremely costly venture.

So with that in mind, I suggest you move to Costa Rica instead!

I would tend to believe the monster data is more accurate then the bestplaces. bestplaces data seems to better represent California in the year 2000, 2001 before 9/11

... makes it sound like this is just a spur of the moment idea. Which it may be. That's cool too - and I'd love to be able to just pack up and move somewhere cool. Financially however, it's not possible for me at this time (and probably not ever) - especially heading from somewhere with an average cost of living (Oregon) to an extremely high cost of living, such as Hawaii. I'll envy you if you can pull it off. That's for sure.

I have a friend who moved to Hawaii for 4 years post divorce. He eventually moved back to Los Angeles, but I'd be happy to put the two of you in touche if you like. Like I said, his experience was post divorce, so things like schools and other Family issues were not, well, issues for him. But happy to see if he'd be willing to talk to you none-the-less.

My ex-GF was born & raised in Hawaii.

The one thing I remember about the expensive cost of living there that really drives it home was this: A trip to Taco Bell for lunch costed almost $20 for the two of us. And no, she didn't order 12 burrito supremes.
