NASA has something up their sleeve...

Look for an announcement of significant findings by the MER Team today...Fair warning though what blows up a scientist's skirt may not be all that exciting to normal folk...:)...Then again we are the most abnormal collective I can think of offhand so...

I believe a normal briefing from NASA Washington is scheduled for 2pm Eastern...

update: Hrrrm yeah they pulled Squyres (the MER Principal Investigator) to Washington for this briefing at 2pm...link below to NASA's own release on the conference, including real time Real Player feed for the conference...

The good news...
from the article Winnow linked wrote:NASA scientists say the Mars rovers have found what they were looking for: Hard evidence that the red planet was once "soaking wet."
The bad news...
same article wrote:The cost of the two rover missions is about $820 million dollars. With solar panels and lithium-ion battery systems aboard, each rover is expected to function and communicate with earth for about 90 Mars days, known as "sols." That's equivalent to 92 earth days.
Holy shit, that's a cost of $9 million per operational day! You would think for that much NASA could have used longer lasting batteries.
The statement below is true.
The statement above is false.

That's only $0.20 per mile from home per day.

My neighbor who sells 401k plans gets $0.37 a mile from his company. So i think we can all agree that Discovering water is a hell of a lot cheaper on mars than selling retirment plans.

lol

Growing up around Johnson Space Center, I'm always delighted to hear of our progress in space exploration, whatever the cost. People who are concerned about the costs of something like this, that advances humanity so much, should be more concerned about the cost of the Iraq war/occupation.

Besides, it's money well-invested. It will lead to future discoveries, future gains, future progression for the human race.

If the planet next door to us had water at some point in its history, water which is an important element in life as we know it, what are the possibilities for the other million planets in our galaxy which could also have the same characteristics as Earth or even Mars? This news is very welcome indeed. Perhaps not in my lifetime, but sometime soon, I hope humans will find themselves part of a larger scheme.

Then we can wage war against Aliens of Mass Destruction.

The only way we humans will stop killing each other is if we all join together to annihilate the alien menace. Down with Buggers! 'Cept Fesuni, whom I find amusing at times.

Bah we should turn it over to commercial interests. They'd figure out a way to get there for half the cost just so they could sell us "purified" Martian water as a sports drink!
