Everquest II - anyone going?

Hello Veeshan. This is my first post on the famous/infamous ( ) Veeshan Vault.

Well, some of you may know me. I have played on Everquest for a very long time on the same character. Since September of 2000.

Shlamorel Starwrath, my erdutie wizard. I took several breaks but am back again, soon to be leaving again but this time for another reason.

I finally came back and got my character to level 65 like I always wanted, lots of AA's, etc. But in the end, I am just too far behind the top players in the top guilds because of the breaks I have taken from EQ in the past. So, I am switching over to EQII when it's released for a fresh start. This time I've learned from my mistakes and will be much wiser when it comes to knowing the results of taking a break. I've always desired the high end raiding aspect of EQ more then anything, but I'm simply too far behind now to be there.

Anywho, just wanted to know if anyone else was headed over there? Would be cool to chat and maybe even get on the same server. Throw me an IM on AIM at IrishVoidJG or my email address is IrishVoidJG@hotmail.com

Everything I read about EQ2 makes me want to jab myself in the eyeballs with a pencil. You probably couldn't find somebody more hard core who didnt lose their job, but enough is enough. As is I'm not even really looking forward to WoW anymore either. L2 is the only game I've seen lately that looks like it could be worth playing seriously.

Depends on the state of the tech.

If my PC is a 500 GHz Pentium 6 with a terrabyte of RAM running at processor speed and quad 30,000 RPM SAS drives in a RAID 1 config, AND SOE has incorporated the next generation of the jiggle engine used in DOA Xtreme V-ball to go along with those gajillion poly models, then I'll check EQ2 out.

Why aspire to join a top level guild?

Why pour a ton of time into something that goes poof when you trip over the power cord?

Time is precious, while EQ allows you to escape this world and not worry about your real life problems, it does little to make your real life better.

The time cost versus reward is too small to justify being a hard core gamer.

I've experienced every level of this game, and in the end it took three years of my life and left only a trifle of real-world positives.

Some people have fun playing the game, it's not always negative. The power cord analogy is ridiculous. Sure you aren't gaining anything physically tangible by playing EQ, but you also don't gain anything tangible from flying a kite or listening to a piece of music or whacking off or helping an old lady across the street or hearing a funny joke or etc. or etc. I've met a lot of people through eq that I enjoy far more than a lot of people that I've met in real life. Sure, mining coal will get you a lot more stuff you can light on fire to heat your house, does that mean I'd rather be a coal miner than a gamer? Nofuckingway.

I hate it when people are so goddamn holier-than-thou because they had an addiction to something and now they must belittle other people who still enjoy said item or activity. Just because your inability to responsibly enjoy something drives your boner into the ground doesn't mean it's an inherently bad thing.

I feel the same way. I probably will try it out, but just as a casual player. The first couple years of EQ I was hard core and I don't ever want to go back to that. Luckily, I tend to get bored with games a lot faster than I used to, so that shouldn't be a problem. Plus, I have too many things going on in my life now to keep me interested in more stimulating activities.

Ditto to the both of you. I enjoyed my time spent playing, and I miss the game occasionally. I certainly miss talking to some of my online pals (though VV fills that need, for the most part...still wonder what LP and Maly are up to these days...), but my life is *so* much more productive and busy now that I really don't think I could ever be hard core again...not for a while.

I've experienced the full range of this game. Low end and high end, follower and leader, casual and hard core. I know the extent of the bonds of friendship formed. I know the emotion attached to what at the time was significant. I know the craving of that 5'oclock hour when I can resume. I know the feeling of getting unique loot that no else ever had. I've dropped dragons and pixies, 2 hour boss mobs and emperor crush. I woke the Sleeper. I've lead raids to success and failure. I even had a in game marriage. I lived life through guild politics. I spend multiple 48 hour segments without sleep camping that ever elusive drop that I so desparately needed. I even did the FoH thing.

I speak from that personal experience.

I speak for myself, not for Winnow or anyone else \
and I say now,
looking back on it, it was a poor use of my time.

And yet, you made some friends that you still enjoy speaking with online to this day. I, for one, am damned pleased that you played this game and on the same server as me. It has been a pleasure and a joy to know you all this time.

I can think of more enriching things to do with my life, but I do not regret what has passed nor should you. You have learned the lessons you learned only as a result of what happened.

So you regret some of the time you feel was wasted.
So you let the addiction get the better of you.
So you see now some other choices you could have made.

I don't want anybody to take this the wrong way, because I seriously say it without any sort of value judgement, but this is simply called growing. People grow out of things all the time, and that's not to say that any one postition regarding something is more valid than the other, it's just that one party changes and the other doesn't.

Liken it to a girlfriend. This girl might be the best in the world, and you date her for a while, and eventually, you just grow apart. Now you might look back on that time spent with her as time wasted in a relationship that was leading you nowhere while you could have been looking for somebody you clicked with more. Somebody who comes after you might find her to be perfect, and she might fill their needs wonderfully. The whole process does not change the value of the girl, nor does it call into question the earnestness or maturity of the person who stuck with her. It simply means that the first person grew away from her for whatever reason, and found life afterward more fulfilling.

I think Adex is saying something similar.

When playing, I considered them both to be friends (and still do), and don't think the choice of one of them to play or not to play reflects on the other at all.

that's correct. met Adex and Leelee (briefly) at Dallas Fan Faire. Adex is a really nice guy. Leelee was pretty dramatic the few hours she was there. That's all I'll say.

I don't think Lee and Nos are actually married yet but are dating, unless they eloped and haven't called me. Lee and Oter were married IRL but got divorced. Lee and Adex were married in game for a while. Lee and Nos are both really fun and are good friends IRL, just wish I got to seem them more.

I met Adex at the first LoTR when we had an EQ get together in Little Rock. He was, as suspected, just like he was in game, a great guy.

Personally I spent a LOT of time playing EQ for a long time. There are portions of that time I should have been spending with my wife and RL firends. However I not only enjoyed it but alternative reality was theraputic after my father suddenly died in late 99'. I never expected the concern, cards, emails etc... I got from my guild when it happened. Many of my closest friends now live far away and EQ filled that gap for me and now I have friends all over, many whom I enjoy conversing with here on a daily basis.

Eventually I needed to spend less time doing that and more time focusing on RL, so that is what I do. However I don't regret that time. I enjoyed it, made some good friends and learned a lot about my needs in the process... can't really ask for much more than that.
