Young Star Salaries over/underpaid

Post by Winnow »

From the list of actors under 30 below, who's the most over paid and who do you think is underpaid on the list?

Prices in $$ millions asking price per movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Asking Price: 20
Age: 27

Reese Witherspoon, Asking Price: 15
Age: 26

Tobey Macguire, Asking Price: 15
Age: 28

Angelina Jolie, Asking Price: 12-15 (rumored)
Age: 28

Drew Barrymore, Asking Price: 10-14
Age: 27

Colin Farrell, Asking Price: 10
Age: 27

Kate Winslet, Asking Price: 5
Age: 28

Orlando Bloom, Asking Price: 5
Age: 27

Kirsten Dunst, Asking Price: 5
Age: 21

Julia Stiles, Asking Price: 5
Age: 24

Kate Hudson, Asking Price: 5
Age: 24

Hilary Duff, Asking Price: 3
Age: ?

LeeLee Sobieski, Asking Price: 3
Age: 22

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Asking Price: 3
Age: 26

Hilary Swank, Asking Price: 2-3
Age: 29 this July 30th

Heath Ledger, Asking Price: 2
Age: 25

James Franco, Asking Price: 2
Age: 25

Claire Danes, Asking Price: 2
Age: 24

Haley Joel Osment, Asking Price: 2
Age: 15

Penelope Cruz, Asking Price: 2
Age: 29

Freddie Prinze Jr., Asking Price: 2
Age: 28

Rachael Leigh Cook, Asking Price: 2
Age: 24

Ryan Phillipe, Asking Price: 2
Age: 28

Kristanna Loken, Asking Price: 1-2
Age: 24

Keira Knightley, Asking Price: 1-2
Age: 18

Christina Ricci, Asking Price: 1
Age: 23

Katie Holmes, Asking Price: 1
Age: 24

--------------
If these prices are still accurate, I'd take Orlando Bloom for a cheap 5 million and throw in maybe Keira Knightley for 1-2 million as eye candy for the guys. That's a cheap 6 million for a romantic comedy that would probably do well at the box offics no matter how well they acted. As for an acadamy award level movie I'd have to rethink my choices!

Leonardo Dicaprio = waaaayyyy overpriced.

He may have some talent, but even that + his monstrous ego isn't worth 20 million.

Ricci only Johannsen (sp?) isn't on the list.

Leonardo is way overpaid, but besides that it's interesting to see how much they "charge" per picture. Was watching something on E about star salaries, and after paying out for publicity, agents, etc... they only get a fraction of what they are actually paid for a movie.

So say Ryan Phillipe asks for 2 million a picture, after taxes and all that, he would probably only be paid a cool 200,0000 to 400,000 probably for a picture.

What I find really funny is how someone as talentless as Brad Pitt, can demand a salery of 30 million a picture. ;)

Leonardo DiCaprio, Asking Price: 20:
OVERPAID, the guy should imo PAY 20 mil to be in a movie.

Reese Witherspoon, Asking Price: 15
Sounds fair enough, shes a talented actress.

Tobey Macguire, Asking Price: 15
Sounds good too, hes a cool actor, guess his price will go up after Spiderman 2 release.

Drew Barrymore, Asking Price: 10-14
Well, shouldnt she get more after Charlies Angels?

Orlando Bloom, Asking Price: 5
Hes going up, after Lord of the Rings and Pirates, hell rise FAST.

Hilary Swank, Asking Price: 2-3
Should think that an Oscar for best actress would increase her salary some, she should get more.

Freddie Prinze Jr., Asking Price: 2
Well, unlike leonardo decaprio, who after all actually was in some good movies, FPJ cant even boast that, way overpaid.

Ryan Phillipe, Asking Price: 2
Like Freddie Prinze Jr, Ryan is WAY overpriced.

Keira Knightley, Asking Price: 1-2
Seems fair enough afterall shes a new star, but guess shell increase her wages soon, after Pirates 2 :). And 1-2 mil is cheap for nice girls like that.,

a lot of those are out of date or taken on last known deal, which could be inaccurate because some actors will take less money to do a more indy film or take a smaller payout in return for a percentage of the backend. for example it says christina ricci gets only $1m but that was because she only took that much for prozac nation. her last couple of films have been 3 and 4 million (I almost vomit when I think about getting paid that much to make a fucking movie).

penelope cruz's price per film has almost quadrupled since she started fucking tom cruise.

i'm not sure how you can say movie stars are overpayed.

the market clearly pays them what they can get. Movies make a tremendous amount of money, and in many cases, this has a great deal to do with the actors.

Put Brad Pitt in a movie, and it will gross $100 million, if it is him reading the paper.

If these numbers are actually accurate, then I woudl say dicaprio is overpaid. I can't stand him. I think Jolie is overpaid as well. I just don't find her all that attractive after knowing she screwed billy bob.

Dunst is underpaid. I suspect she will be making a bit more than 5 mill for spidey 2 though. She's hot and a good actress. Ricci is underpaid but she was a much cuter child actor. She kinda grew up ugly. She is a good actress though.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio is a natural born actor. I rank him up there with Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp, both of whom he has starred with. He is very talented, chooses his roles very carefully (once he was truely able to choose his roles), and is not afraid to take chances. I appreciate that. Read what his co-stars had to say about him while filming Romeo and Juliet. He is gifted.

Having just said that, I believe box office standings should play into the figure a great deal. Leonardo DiCaprio's past couple of films after Titanic have never come close to Titanic's sales, but evveryone can agree that movie grossed enough to make up for a good 5-6 flops. Only The Beach was a true flop, the others have been moderate successes for thier target audiences.

If you believe Leonardo DiCaprio to be a poor actor, I encourage you to watch The Basketball Diaries, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and of course, Critters 3, "You Are What They Eat".

On a serious note, I look forward to his next picture in which he will play Howard Hughes.

I'm not a huge fan of his. In fact when people mention his name I kinda groan. However, having said that, I did think he did a really good job in Basketball Diaries and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. In fact, I'd say you should really watch Basketball Diaries if you haven't, its a pretty good movie.

I totally agree Leonardo's got the talent. And probably is a natural born actor - I've even enjoyed a good number of his movies. It's just crazy any actor making 20 mil on a movie. Especially one that isn't exactly producing huge box office smashes everytime he makes a movie. Yes.. there was titanic.. but look at the 5 mil Kate Winslet's ringing in in comparison. And titanic made that Celine Dion song popular for entirely too long - so I've got to hate on it simply out of principle.

Add to that the general annoyance I get everytime I pay to see a movie and get spammed with the anti-piracy commercial. Like.. hello movie theatre jackasses - I'm the one PAYING here, don't fucking lecture me on piracy! grrr. Hate those fuckers.

Considering Drew Barrymore fronts the cash for a lot of the films she is in (Executive Producer), she is essentially paying herself. Overpaid maybe, but wouldn't you give yourself a good salary if you owned the company?

Why the fuck is Ben Affleck - $15million per movie not up there.

The fact that I live in a country where Affleck gets $15mil a movie and Matt Damon, who is not a jackass and can actually act, only gets $10mil a movie makes me want to go on a killing spree in Hollywood. :x

Are they under 30? The list had an age limit.

Here's the link to the old actors:

It's too long to post here but worth a look. You can also read the comments about the 13-29 age group linked from that page.

BEN: How many times do I have to tell you? First you do the safe picture, then you an art picture. Then sometimes you have to do a picture because somebody says you owe him, and that's called a payback picture.

MATT: Sometimes you do "Reindeer Games."

BEN: OK, that was low.

A snippet from the 29-50 list:

Vin Diesel
Asking Price: 20 Mil
Age: 36
Hits: Pitch Black. The Fast and the Furious.Triple X (sort of -but given the hype it was an underperformer.)
Survival Prospects: Who the hell knows? It's either a long one or a flash in the pan. There's probably no inbetween here.
Worth It? Whatever. Of course not.
Next Project: Two sequels: Riddick and XXX2

George Clooney
Asking Price: 15
Age: 42
Hits: Perfect Storm.Oceans 11
Survival Prospects: Very strong. He's not greedy. He's not pricing himself as high as he could thereby insuring that if he flops -he won't look humiliated about nobody willing to meet his fee. Also he regularly takes less than his asking price to snag other hot stars -helping the movie as a whole. A smart smart guy.
Next Project: One for the cineastes, the Coen Bros Intolerable Cruelty and one for the box office, Oceans 12.

Matt Damon
Asking Price: 10-12
Age: 33 this Oct 8th.
Hits: Good Will Hunting. The Talented Mr Ripley.Oceans 11. The Bourne Identity
Survival Prospects: Very strong. A terrific actor and also apparently not very greedy.
Next Project: Lots of brotherly love upcoming from this star. Jersey Girl stars his longtime best buddy, Ben Affleck for Kevin Smith, in Stuck on You he's the siamese twin of Gregg Kinnear for the Farrelly Bros. and in The Brothers Grimm for Terry Gilliam, he and Heath Ledger are the famous story spinning brothers.

Vin Diesel
Asking Price: 20 Mil
This is the ultimate in WTF.
This guy sucks ass. Egomaniac without a shred of talent. Doesn't even look that good either. Compare him to Leonardo, and suddenly Leonardo asking price of 20 mil makes much more sense ;)

The Rock is a better action star than Vin Diesel. He not only does fanfuckingtastic action sequences, but he's also a better actor.

Yes, but he CAN'T ACT. It's a movie, not a fashion show or club. DiCaprio, as much as it pains me to say it, can in fact act.

Anyways, he can only ask so much cash because he's a big box office draw. It's like a guarantee at making money for the studio.

This guy sucks ass. Egomaniac without a shred of talent.
I've seen a number of interviews with Vin Diesel and he is far from an egomanaic. I got the impression that he's actually pretty modest and a bit overwhelmed by his popularity.
I don't care for his movies at all and think he's a dreadful actor but just because he's typecast into egomaniac roles, you can't make such a comment about his personality.

I don't think I've ever liked a movie she did. She has no talent.
that's like saying you have no taste, it's just stupid to claim she has no talent, she does. she's not the best actress out there, but she has draw and popularity. ergo she's smart enough to ask a price befitting that. you not liking her movies is totally beside the point.

Jolie and Barrymore are well overpriced.
Swank is about the only underpriced one I see. Maybe Winslet and Dunst too.
romeo and juliet did have one of the kewlest looks for bad guy in the movies though, John Leguizamo was super kewl in that movie.

and winslet is underpaid .. she's damn good and the best looking actress in the movies !!!!

katie holmes should get more just for beeing a cutie pie :D

If you want a real good laugh at Vin Diesel's expense go rent the Iron Giant DVD and watch him host the special features. Can't even read a teleprompter.
