System lag.. serious.

Post by Akaran_D »

Vitals:
Dell Dimension 8200
P4 1.7ghz processor
GeForce Ti4600 graphics card
512 MB Ram
Windows XP
VM Paging file is 2gigs (to counteract an old EQ memory leak)

Problem:
Noticing this primarily with high graphics games. SimCity 4, Painkiller demo, Planetside, UT2k3, UT2k4 demo, ect.

About every 15 seconds or so in every game listed BUT planetside, I freeze up for upwards of 30 seconds+. With PS, it's about every 15 minutes. The game still continues while the lag is going on, but the screen locks. It's making it near impossible to play pretty much everything but PS, and I don't imagine that will continue to be playable soon at this rate..

I've updated my drivers, I've ran ad aware and anti virus programs. I can't seem to track the source of th eproblem down.

On another note, my monitor is also making this high pitched screeching sound. A simply smack across teh top of it stops it, but it usually starts again a short time thereafter.

Any tips?

But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

Sounds like your graphics card or your monitor. Might be a combination of the two. I had a monitor that was not compatible with my Radeon card when PS was back in beta and I had to buy a new one. Most likely it is the video card though if you don't experience problems any other time.

When I get home I'm going to try and see if switching to my old Compaq monitor fixes the problem, at least until I can get enough cash to send said Dell monitor back to Dell for a replacement or fix... really, really hope that's it.

Ok, monitor change didn't work.. my old compaq montior won't work on this syem.
Spent an hour on tech support, if it still whiens tommorow I'm getting a free replacement (yay me for thinking ahead and getting ong term contracts!) monitor.

Still chugged like a madman on th ePainkiller demo till I effectively murdered all the graphics options, then it started running fine. Will try it with UT2k$ in a few.
