the best games you've never heard of

Post by emmer »

I was recently involved in a discussion about the lesser known games of the past... and considering this is primarily a gaming oriented community, I figured I'd pose the question here.

What were your top five favorite games you don't feel got the recognition they deserved?

For me it would be -

River City Ransom (NES)
Super Dodge Ball (NES)
Metal Warriors (SNES)
Kirby's Dream Course (SNES)
ActRaiser (SNES)

I'm sure you've heard of it, but just how popular was Phantasy Star II for Sega Genesis? That was one of my favorite games ever.

Maniac Mansion was GREAT!!!

You could actually click on things (desks etc) and open them!!!!

I remember being amazed that you could actually interact with your surroundings...

ahh.. the old days...

The Labyrinth (C64, Lucasarts first attempt at adventures, BEFORE Maniac Mansion, text + graphic/command based, cool game)
Maniac Mansion (C64, the game that more or less made adventure games)
Grim Fandango (PC, never got the credit it deserved)
The Longest Journey (PC, BAD marketing, but sold well in europe, but almost noone know it for some reason)
Crusader - No Remorse/No Regret (PC, imo one of the best action games ever made, but also fairly unknown, get the full version for the cutscenes, ripped version suck)

Oh, and while sitting here listening to my extensive game music collection, i might wanna add Phantasmagoria 1 on the list for the title number alone, noone know that, but seriously nice music, scary.

Solar Jetman for the NES! I used to play the fuck out of that when I was little.

Ikari Warriors(I think) was pretty fun, no idea if it was popular or not though. Tiger Heli was also tons of fun, but it's been mentioned.
