I'm gonna play the devil's advocate here, as much as I despise the fucker.
Thing is, when you're singing on stage you have a monitor speaker so you can hear yourself through all the other noise (i.e. music). The fucker was lip syncing, so he didn't "need" a monitor, and he sure as hell couldn't hear a fucking sound he was making due to the surrounding speakers.
After this "incident" Howard Stern dared him to come on his show and sing live. He did and he had no problem keeping tune.
