Bush trails Kerry, MSNBC poll says

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4049942
Despite having delivered a State of the Union address that was well received by his conservative core, Bush’s own standing has slipped among registered voters. "Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better," he declared Tuesday. But more people now say they are dissatisfied (52 percent) than satisfied (43 percent) with the way things are going in the United States, down from a post-9/11 peak last April of 50 percent satisfied. And even thought Bush used the State of the Union to emphasize his controversial tax cuts, Medicare overhaul, opposition to gay marriage and a burgeoning economic rebound, Bush saw his job performance ratings dip to 50 percent approval (versus 44 percent who disapprove)—his most negative ratings to date—suggesting a nation sharply divided over the president and his policies. To be sure, Bush is just as solidly backed by Republicans (85 percent) as he is opposed by Democrats (86 percent).

Overall, 52 percent of those polled by NEWSWEEK say they would not like to see Bush serve a second term, compared to 44 percent who want to see him win again in November. As a result, Kerry is enjoying a marginal advantage over Bush, a first for the poll. Forty-nine percent of registered voters chose Kerry, compared to 46 percent who re-elected Bush. In fact, all Democrats are polling better against Bush, perhaps due to increased media attention to their primary horserace: Clark gets 47 percent of voters’ choice compared to 48 percent from Bush; Edwards has 46 percent compared to Bush’s 49; Leiberman wins 45 percent versus Bush’s 49 percent; and Dean fares the worst with 45 percent of their votes to Bush’s 50 percent.

Good for Kerry, his campaign is really gathering steam. Hopefully the US will have someone with some fucking backbone in the white house next year.

It will be interesting to see how the popular vote vs. electoral vote comes out this time. I think it's safe to say the states whose electorals do not need to reflect the popular vote will be in the spotlight.

Frankly, I see more parallels between the Bush administration and Nixon's: both very secretive, politically ruthless, and very "us against them".

Nixon was better that Bush at foreign policy (who isn't?), but neither of them had a clue how to extract the country from a bad war.

Nixon instituted national price controls, while Bush exacted ridiculous tariffs -- both cardinal sins of economics committed for political points.

Nixon's "dirty tricks" are called to mind by Bush's administration leaking the name of an undercover CIA agent in order to punish her husband for criticizing pre-Iraq War intelligence.

Kissinger and Rumsfield will be bunkmates in hell.

You know, after thinking about this for a bit, I'd almost rather have Nixon in office than Bush right now.

Ermmm I agree...2 of many strikes against Bush..

I was just saying I would greatly prefer a president who can actually think...:)...

I'm not sure Kerry is that great of an alternative...seems still too much a part of the machinery to me but...

Uhh we just got there man, I think Bush is more focused on winning than running at the present time. I for one think things are moving along pretty well. It could certainly be better, but we are on the path to success. Despite all the whining and hysterics from the pessimists on the left the situation in Iraq will continue to improve and Iraq will become a free, peaceful, democratic nation.

This poll means exactly jack and shit. When it comes time to cast their votes in November, Americans will have enough common sense to vote for the man with conviction and proven leadership skills. There are a couple of things I disagree with Bush on, but when I take a look at all the phony, pathetic candidates the democrats have for president any disagreement I may have with Bush pales in comparison to my revulsion for them.

This poll means jack shit at this time. We've got 24/7 news channel coverage showing these fools blasting Bush with only occasional breaks to update us on another fool Michael Jackson. How can anyone even attempt to have a positive thought about Bush, the economy, or Iraq with all this bullshit being spewed out all the time. Most people are sheep, they will follow whatever lead is put in front of them. When Kerry's past is really dug out with his very liberal voting history, if he does end up the democrats choice, he won't have the same free ride he has now. Bush and Co. will tear him a new ass when the time comes. That all said, I wouldn't consider myself a Bush fanatic either. If I thought Lieberman could grow a personality and get rid of that whiny voice he'd be my number one choice. I voted for Bush Sr. originally, Bush Sr. the second time, then Clinton, followed by Gore although it was a close call on whether to go for Bush Jr. so I really wasn't upset how it turned out. Now, with the options I see in the next election there is no doubt I will be voting Bush. As I saw Ann Richards once say, on Larry King I believe it was, "Never underestimate George Bush". I have to admit I'm a bit concerned about our deficit but Reagan ran up a much larger one and we came out of that just fine so I'm not to the really concerned stage at this point. Iraq and Afghanistan will gradually improve and eventually become a non issue. If the economy keeps growing, jobs will have to follow at some point just to maintain productivity so that could become a non issue as well. Things could tank and sink Bush before November but I doubt it.

True. On the other hand, Nixon wasn't actually responsible for getting us into his bad war.

Hope so. Remember how all those historical ethnic hostilities simply evaporated when the former Yugoslavia was declared "free, peaceful, democratic"?

I think it's safe to say, that after the last presidential election fiasco, if the electoral votes don't go the way of the popular vote (especially if it causes Bush to win from losing, again), there's going to be a serious backlash.

Kerry can't beat Bush. Republicans are much better organized than the democrats are right now and the democrats are throwing enough dirt around that it will hurt whoever does win the primary badly enough for Bush to finish killing them off. The only one I think that can really stand up to this is Wesley Clark because he isn't a lifelong politician. He is the only democrat I would vote for.

As it is, I am still voting Libertarian. My vote doesn't mean shit so I might as well vote the spoiler. :) Gary Nolan for President!

polls dont mean much, but i like the result of this one.

its a long way to November, and there have been tons of people who won in New Hampshire who didnt do shit afterwards (Paul Tsongas, Pat Buchanen, etc). So while Kerry's campaign is certainly doing well, it is super early.

I think Edwards' critical stand is in South Carolina, and he could become a viable candidate there.

Kerry and Edwards as a combination ticket i think would be -as many have said - the most formidible democratic ticket.

I did like how Sean Hannity reacted to the debate last week.

..During the debate:

Peter Jennings: Senator Kerry, if you are the nominee, the Republicans will label you as a "Massachussetts Liberal", how do you respond?

one hour later on Hannity and Colmes:

Sean Hannity: John Kerry is just a Massachusetts Liberal...

i thought it was funny. I really want to know if Karl Rove sends a memo to all these jokers each morning. I do know Roger Ailes posts a memo on the Fox News Newsroom floor (not literally on the floor) each day with political points to hammer on throughout the day's coverage.

Anyways, I watched Real Time with Bill Mahrer (who i'm not a big fan of) for the first time last week, and he had a joke:

"The Democratic race is so close, Fox News doesn't know which candidate to smear"

i think they're figuring that part out ;)

I can't recall Clinton's approval rating dipping to its lowest since he had taken office during the republican primaries in 1996.

The poll doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but probably means a ton in terms of Kerry's nomination campaign and fundraising. It's also things like this that help sway opinions. Pretty big deal for the now, if not the future.

Are you kidding, all of those yokels are on WABC in New York even if Hannity managed to make a living off of angering the educated and stupefying the ignorant. It is a scary thought, but all of the schmoes who carry the Rush Mantle seem even more radical and supremacist in nature

If Edwards can hang in there and really crush in SC (the only state with any real Electoral pull in the beginning), he'll go from the solid running mate to the running lead awfully quickly.

Obviously GW is going to be re-elected.

List the issues that the Dems can use against GW... now visualize how the Dems can turn those issues into appealing 30 second TV ads. Take WMD's, yeah, GW looks real vulnerable there. How do you take advantage of that in a short TV ad when the middle swing voters don't even pay attention to Dan Rather let alone reading a newspaper editorial?

Meanwhile, GW counters with familiar images of him in the pit of the WTC with the firefighters, and then him landing on the aircraft carrier, and the video of Saddam coming out of the hole, and on and on and on. Now consider that GW will have at least 1/4$Billion dollars to wage his campaign war come fall.

I'm not saying it's impossible for GW to be beaten but the odds are sure in his favor.

My prediction is GW takes 55% of the popular vote and wins about 43 or 44 states in the Electoral College. It won't be a landslide but will be a hugely comfortable margin.

BTW, I think this is a fine thing.

I think it all depends on who gets the nomination... I personally don't think Kerry has the chrisma to beat Bush, they are too much alike (career politicians). Dean is a joke, he will alienate all the swing voters just like his Army did to those moderates in Iowa. I personally think that only Clark or Edwards have a true chance at beating Bush because they are "outsiders." Out of those I think they both have a pretty good chance. My hope is that Edwards will carry SC and a couple of other states. If he can do that he will have a real chance for the nomination.

The Republicans can talk all they want about Tax cuts but I know that until this year I made less than I had in the previous 3 years. However each year I had to pay a SHITLOAD of taxes... and I'm still paying them out. The middle class is what keeps this country strong and IMHO Bush and his administration is doing their best to screw us. It's like that guys said on Hunt for Red October, "I'm a politician, that means when I'm not kissin' babies I'm stealing their lolly pops." I can't think of any phrase that better sums up the current administration... and yes, against Gore, I voted for him and I'm glad I did... but just like we needed a change then, we definitely need another one now.

I just look at and like it because it has poll numbers from many sources a good format to average out and get a more accurate reading. Its just a good webpage to get many major polls(gallup, newsweek, fox, cnn, zogby ect.) at the sametime and compare ....shows em if there good or bad whichever way ya look at it....and are the actual numbers they poll as you can check them out with the original source and see there the same number.

Before you go geting all lit up inside over Kerrys lead, consider that he has had two weeks of solid aritime while Bush is off being President.

It's normal for an opposition candidate to lead populist pools during their primary. Americans like a good scrap.

I take it this is a site you did not bother to actually click on before commenting. Anyone with half a brain can look at that site and see that in every poll listed, the trend over time is that Kerry is gaining on Bush and in fact has recently overtaken him. I am sure that is not the image a "right wing me too brainless fucking dogshit publication" would want to fabricate if it was going to choose to make shit up.
