For everyone that's whining about the cold weather atm, there is an interesting article about the Gulf Stream and some big swings in temperature possible for Europe in the next decade or so.

It seems legitimate enough to be a concern although the website that posted it might be like the Enquirer. Maybe an english chap can shed some light on that.

yeah, ok. We still really don't have a friggin clue about global warming, how it works, what causes it, or if it is indeed going on.

I saw a documentary about this recently and it was very interesting. Some VERY clever climate/meteorology expert happened across some research outside his usual field and joined the dots. Then core samples from Greenland pointed out he might be right, so in an attempt to check on the theory they got some ninja oceanographer to measure the salinity of the atlantic conveyor (the cold deep water that runs the opposite direction to, and feeds, the gulf stream). The salinity of the conveyor has dropped fuckin drastically in the last 20 years and is all ready at levels that threaten the continuation of the gulf stream.
This his happened quite often compared to full-blown ice ages and these giant brains were predicting that the gulf stream WOULD (not could) stop within about 40 years. This not only has ramifications for the UK/Europe (we're at the same latitude as the Moscow and the bits of Canada that are infested with polar bears but we have very warm weather) but for the rest of thw world too as it would cause a contraction of temperate zones and an increase in desertification. And that means a loss of forests, an increase in CO2 and implies a lot for the future of the human food chain with respect to it's ability to feed 6 billion.
I try to keep an open mind on environmental issues even though my instincts lean toward humans having a large impact even though environmental scientists employed by energy companies continually throw out a smokescreen

But this was some serious, well researched shit from some severely eminent science brains.
One to watch, IMO.

edit. Ok, I just read the actual article and am in stitches over the nightmare scenario would liken it to Labrador. Hell, I'm from Canada and don't even know what Labrador is like, other than some weird pseudo-province that's part of Newfoundland. It's ALWAYS the Newfies!

Ah beautiful Goose Bay, Labrador. That's where my parents met! It's ALMOST as nice as the Gander airport, but not queit. Just a close second.
