Leonard Cohen Question...

Post by Arborealus »

On which recording of Hallelujah does Cohen use these 2 verses?

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Come to think of it maybe I have only heard Andy Cale sing this...:o...Must correct that ommision if so...:)

Bono did it too on the tribute album
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

So did Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright and someone else I can't remember atm... I don't know what particular version of Leonard Cohen's I have but he is singing both of the above mentioned verses in it. Sorry I can't be of more aid!

The version on Cohen Live ends with the second of the two verses but I didn't hear the first of the listed verses. That is the only one I have here at work to check (I'll try to remember to check others at home).

By the way, I know of at least two tribute albums of Leonard Cohen stuff. The one I have seen most in stores is Tower of Song. Another one "I'm Your Fan" also has some good stuff. Plus Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" is all covers of Cohen stuff (with Cohen singing as well on one or two tracks).

Cohen owns :).
