Linksys Router problem

Post by Vetiria »

First off, system information:

I'm using a Linksys BEFW11S4 router with 2 WinXP systems. The first computer is connected through CAT5 cable to the router and the second is connected across a Linksys Wireless PCI Card.

My problem:

The computer using the wireless connection will connect to the router if I manually set the IP address, default gateway, and subnet mask; however, it won't connect to the Internet. The only connection I can get is to the router. If I let the computer automatically get an IP address, I can't even connect to the router.

The other computer connected through the CAT5 to the router connects fine. So I figured I would try connecting through CAT5 and it still won't work. If I connect directly to the cable modem, it lets me connect.

Does this sound like a problem with the router or a problem on cable company's side? I figure it has to be on their side since one computer connected directly to the router has access to the Internet, but not the other.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I forgot to mention, it was connecting fine just a couple days ago with the computer set to automatically receive an IP address. I shut the computer down and the next day it stopped connecting altogether. I've been playing around with it for a couple days now trying to get it to connect to the Internet.

Go to your network card settings for the comp with the wireless card and make sure the wireless card is set to Internet. Sometimes it'll swap out to Work, which will then cause it to stop working properly.

First thing I'd do would be to unplug the router and cable\DSL modem for a minute or two and power them back up. Your ISP may have changed something and you aren't current.

Then restart your computers with the automagic settings that previously worked.

I didn't even try resetting the router. That's annoying when you forget to try the simplest of things. Thanks Aab.
