Hmm Zogby has a fascinating read

Zogby argues that political voting differences are highly geographic.

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20040 ... -7397r.htm

He thinks people dramatically vote differently because within these geographic regions, the whole culture is different.

This may explain why a New York democrat have a hard time relating to a republican from Oklahoma.

Perhaps its hard for us to see eye to eye on things because we literally are living in notably different cultures?

It hardly seems surprising, your political system is set up to support cultural diversity. That's the reason so few federal laws override state laws, and why there is so much outrage when they do. Not to mention, there's no sane reason to have 48 states in a landmass the size of the US, it just makes it easier to find the state that has the combination of laws that suit you.

Every now and then in my life I've worked or was a friend with people who had political ideals totally at odds with me.

It was as if they saw the world through a different filter than me.

That made me think that I should be wary when I see information or news. Perhaps "I'm" filtering the facts to fit my political viewpoint and in the process losing some of the truth.

This theory goes a long way towards explaining those "You just don't get it" moments when talking to people.

I'm sure it's a worthy goal to try to look at the world without coloring to your own notions for fear of distorting your understanding.

This article serves to support my personal reasoning in this area.

I'm glad you see that you're living life from an incorrect viewpoint.

This is why you should give more weight to those of us who see the world through a more enlightened viewpoint.

I'm sure you've grown up in a small town insulated and "filtered" from the truths of this world.

This is why a strong federal government is important. It serves to protect those in our country who aren't quite immersed in reality, or are made powerless by their lack of understanding.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but it is well established that people who champion progressive causes tend to be more open, accepting, better educated, and in tune with what's going on in the world.

This greater education, compassion, and world sensitivity gives progressives a better position to form meaningful political policy.

"Upbeat is for people who want to feel good about their cause: the reformers, the progressives, the revolutionaries, the utopians, the collectivists, and the rest of the altruistic scum of the earth. Why do these people want to feel good? They want to feel good in order to convince themselves that they are good. They want to be good in order to be better than other people. And they want to be better than other people in order to push the rest of us around."

Am I the only one that is starting to worry about Mr. Split Personality?

Also, as far as enlightened=liberal, each side of the political aisle has ways they describe themselves that make them seem more open, warm hearted, caring, etc. Nothing new there. For the most part, many of those terms are used by the opposing side in a more pejorative way.
