Smoke at work?

Post by Kindo »

I'm miserable and who better to share ones' misery with than ones' friends? It's like 0 degrees outside after being 40s - 50s all winter. I want a cigarette, but it's too friggin cold to go out to smoke. They have designated where we are permitted to smoke outside (/boggle) and that location is 50 feet away from the building in a drafty bus shelter type of thing with no heat, no real walls and no door. Yes, I know smoking is a fithy, dirty, disgusting habit that makes my hair and clothes smell but shuddup about that aspect and comfort me in my misery. =(

If you're a smoker, what kind of smoking accomodations does your workplace have? Well hell, I guess if you're not a smoker too.

Outside but much closer and the cold (23 degrees right now) helps you stay awake :)

Outside, under a shady tree, (usually) on a nice park bench type seating aparratus (sp?)...

Sunny, 65 degrees, light breeze, birds chirping....

If you've gotta kill yourself slowly, might as well do it in the nicest place possible...

We have an enclosed glass 'bridge' that connects the two buildings I work at. Half of the bridge is totally sealed with climate control, carpet, etc. The other half has a screened 'smoking' area, open to the outdoors, that is sealed off from the main bridge area by two doors. About a month ago when it snowed here, that didn't stop people from going out there amidst the 2 ft. snow drifts on the walkway to puff on their cigarettes.

building I work in is smoke free (which doesn't stop some people from smoking in their offices or in the fire stairwell  ), smoking area is outside right by one of the less used entrances to the building and even yesterday with temps in single digits and windchill at 30 below there were people smoking there. Doing the pee-dance as I call it to keep warm

Back when I worked for a bigger company, they had a designated indoor smoking room which is a nice luxury in the northern U.S. but most small companies don't have this so the smokers are forced outdoors. I personally wish that our company had a designated smoking area 50 ft outside the door because I sit 10 feet from the door and everyone smokes just outside it. So, even though they don't know they are doing it, they are filling the office with smoke every time they come back in. It really pisses me off as it gives me a sore throat and cough every time...plus it stinks and makes the office smell like a cheap motel room.

I miss the old days...

South Dakota passed a law a few years ago whereas smoking in "places of business" is prohibited. The only exception is that smoking is allowed in establishments that have a liquor license such as bars, casinos, or restaraunts...

This is fucked up because, for example, if you own a business (such as a smoke-filled welding shop) and you have NO EMPLOYEES you still can't legally smoke in your office or shop...

It's currently about -15 with the wind-chill, thank god it has warmed up here recently...

Junkies.. all of you!

Go hang out under a bridge with Anthony Keatis and shoot up!

Do you all not see the similarities of your addiction and that of a toothless crack whore sucking teh cock for a fix?

Now understand, if these were fine cigars I'd have complete sympathy for you. I'm a hypocrite like that.

Enjoy your pneumonia!

Can't even smoke in a bar here in CA

It was a shock when I went to the east coast for business, and went into a bar for a drink....the air was so thick with smoke, it made me nostalgic for the old second hand cancer factories that bars used to be.

Smokers crack me up : ) I have no pity but understand the addiction. I'm all for the most strict smoking regulations possible as I don't want that shit anywhere near me. I'm not anal about it and don't care if out at a bar if someone's smoking as it's my choice to be there. EQ attracts addictive personalities so there are a lot of smokers playing it : )

Mind power! It's no secret it's a big time addiction. Quit! If you like to smoke more power to you but you are well aware of it's harmful side affects and should have no problem staying as far away as possible from people that don't want known toxins in their lungs in any public place.

I'm not against drugs. I am against drugs that others can't avoid in public places though (airborn)

Note: I realize noone was really complaining, Ennia talking about smokers freezing outside doing the pee dance made me laugh though!

My office building has a designated smoking room on the bottom floor, right next to the restaurant. I guess I can't complain when it's below zero outside ;)

Isn't illegal? I mean, the law requires that they give you breaks, what you do with your break is up to you isn't it?

As an aside, I am a smoker but only smoke at lunch. I don't take my breaks if only because I forget to. But, if I took one and wanted to smoke and they said I couldn't I would be pissed.

Oh yeah, on topic, smoking section is right outside the building. Really only sucks when it is 115 degrees outside.

I saw a woman smoke a cigarette with her vagina once. I think she was indoors. Doubt she would be able to do something that require that much concentration and dexterity when it was 0 degrees or so. Her workplace is very understanding obviously. :o

Honestly I always thought all that time used to "go outside and take a quick smoke" was really unfair. It really isn't that quick. Yah if you get a designated break and that is the only time you do it that is one thing -

but I have worked in tons of offices where it always seemed a few certain people were outside smoking while me and the other non-smokers were inside doing the work....they weren't doing. Smokers seemed to take many "extra" breaks and because they were "smoking" it was ok - if I just hung out in the hallway all the time they were out for a "smoke break" I'd have been labeled a slacker....

Just a personal observation.

Start smoking, and you too can piss away time and health! You were doing the work, yes, but imagine how many more years in life you'll have to get shit done compared to us Lepers (aka smokers=)

When I used to teach, we ran a 50 minute class \ 10 minute break schedule.

Making a post-coffee deposit, grabbing a smoke, and getting more coffee in under 10 minutes is rough. I used to hate it when students would stop me to ask questions on the way out the door :D

The location I work in has Smoking areas on the "east" and "west" side (reason for the quotes would be known if you know Austin's layout). The "east" side is on the side nearest to Ih-35 so you get to see some trees, some cars, and some cool wrecks. The "west" side is where all of us rejects go. It's about like a cattle pen, and we even put a "do not feed the smokers" sign once, but management didn't like it. At least the "west" side is pretty much HR free which means that what happens in the "Pen" stays in the "Pen." :p
