I agree with your thoughts on this Ashur. And I've noticed the progress Sony has made in combating the time sinks associated with the old school EQ.
EQII, according to all I've read, will take the best parts of DAOC (which I think overall is a big pile of steaming shit) Item decay, viable tradeskills. UO (housing), EQ LDON (Instanced events, no kill stealing).
I just look at this as a lessons learned game (especially with SWG) and hope its all I expect it to be. I just want that feeling again when I first logged on to EQ in 1998.
If I get that feeling then all is well. If I don't, then there is always spending time with my wife and yardwork.
Will anybody be playing EQ2?
One of the coolest features is being able to cross game chat. This will definatly be nice for the people who still have accounts in both games, but maybe only play EQ1 to raid, can easily keep in touch with guildmembers in EQ1 and log off EQ2 when a raid starts. I do believe also that in addition to just cross game chat you can have a cross game guild chat. These are definatly features that will help draw some people to EQ2.
I just hope I get into both betas so I can decide for myself which is better before they are released.
It's funny, when I stopped playing EQ1 last year, I had zero interest in EQ2. Now I'm actually looking forward to it maybe even more than WoW, and I really can't tell you why.

WoW
I've been unable to stop myself from trying every MMO that has come out... with the exception of shadowbane
I'll definately be trying EQ2.. I don't think I'll be able to get in the beta for that one, if it's true you need an active account...
I'm trying my best to get into the WoW beta... did about 4 registrations from different people and places... it does look cartoony, but the rumor is that the game is solid and fun...
both worth a shot, but EQ and UO are still the kings to me....
I miss Catskills, Great Lakes, and Veeshan.
