Pricey Wine

Post by Pherr the Dorf »

Ok this is the other wine thread. This is where the expensive stuff that leaves you wishing you just won the lottery goes. I am not a huge fan of pricey wine, but at the same time I am a sucker for 1er cru burgundies.

What would you consider the cutoff for pricey $30+ in a liquor store (which equals ~$80 in a restaurant)? Most times when I see higher prices in a restaurant, it's typically a special reserve and/or year. I'll try to see what I can remember

Like I said, it'd depend on the wine, a 75 dollar Burgundy is not pricey, a 75 dollar chard borders on pricey and a 75 dollar Syrah is pricey...so it's rather relative.

"Hollywood and Vine" Vineyards
2480 Chardonnay 2002 ~$45 retail
2480 Cabernet 2001 ~ $90 retail

Nothing but amazing. I wold rarely pay this much for a California cab when there as such incredible ones out there for 1/3 the price (i.e. HONIG Napa Cabernet ~ $30 try it)

These guys deserve it though. Vineyard sources from the Tokalon Vineyards all the way up to teh highest point on Mt. Veeder. I'm still proud to have tried it.

As for as REALLY pricey goes... Give me any vintage post 1990 of Domaine Leroy (I know sounds like Arkansas wine, but pronounced Le Wah=)

The producer of Domaine Leroy bought half of the Domaine Romanee Conti estate and is producing wines on it... KILLER if you want to spend around $500 a bottle (expense it to someone else=)

I'm not sure what vintage it was, but my dad had a couple cases of Joseph Phelps' Insignia at their Christmas Party. It was really good!

Phelps Inisgnia is always a great one. Not only that, it's very age-worthy for a California Cab. No matter what vintage it is, I'd say it's probably still excellent if stored halfway properly. It's price has gotten a little extreme, but a lot of them are starting to come down these days. If you really liked it, try Caymus Special Select or some of the Von Strasser Diamond Mountain wines... killer stuff and a the latter is about half the price.

Hell, when Far Niente even lowers their price, you know somethign amiss. I foresee even Silver oak, Cakebread, and many other "in high demand restaurant wines" bringing their prices more inline to reality very soon.
