Baldur's Gate 2
Ok. I don't understand the appeal of this game. I've tried time and time again to get into it, and I just can't. I think it's mostly the interface and the way the game plays. I played through Icewind Dale, loved it, but in retrospect I can't figure out how I ever did it. Maybe I've just been ruined to other types of games thanks to EQ. Maybe I just suck

BG, when it first come out, was simply excellent. I do believe now that I've tasted somewhat better game systems ( such as the one in NWN ), going back would be quite difficult. It's simply not the kind of game I can play two times and enjoy.
As to why I enjoyed in the first place... <--- D&D fan here. And since my group has basically split up because of college, I am groupless, because I refuse to make a 2 hour drive to get a group. So all the games like that are like food for the starved for me.

Dregor! Try use the different AI settings for the wimpier partymembers, like cleric or mage AI on the non-tanks!
That way , when a combat begins, they will first use their respective spells before going in!
The Healers should have the Cleric AI, thus they will stand back and first bless and then heal. You could equip weak druids with a sling or something so that they wont enter melee and instead fire from a distance.
Use the Mage AI on the Offensive casters so they will stand back and blast away instead of rushing for meleecombat!
Helps a bit, try it out!

Tried the AIs out, what a pain in the ass. It overrides stuff you tell it to do with it's own script. Take my paladin for example, I gave it the standard offensive script so that he wouldn't be sitting there between targets for a second. I tell him to go lay hands someone, he starts to walk off, then the script takes over and sends him off to kill something.

Well, it worked fine when i tried it. I had no trouble with vanquishing dragons and demons!
I put AI on three of the chars and controlled the rest (the melee chars) manually and it worked well!
Had a cleric, mage and a druid on auto script.
For a really important battle, i sometimes did some modifications though with the scripts and used the Pause function OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS!
The fight with Gangaxx the lich comes to mind! But it was a rewarding battle!

BG2 for me was the most fun single player I've ever played. Maybe I'm just a story driven guy, but it was rewarding to influence a world and then be able to start over again and choose completely different paths. I was amazed (at the time) at how unique the game was. With that in mind, the Infinity engine (BG interface) was showing it's age with Throne of Bhaal and I hope that if any such games are made in the future, the engine will be revamped.

Whoever posted that BG2 is like chess is right... Especially at low and high levels ( when you're at middle levels, AI does the job... Sloppy, but it works ). Simply de-activate the AI and pause often to give actions. Especially for the casters - a cleric wading into melee works... but when your wizard with ac 10 thinks he's a warrior, he's in for a world of hurt.
