I thought this article was interesting. It's fairly long though. Basically the guys at Edmund's car guide hired a journalist to get a job selling new cars at a dealership and write a story on it. It's a fairly interesting essay on ethics in one the free market's last bazaar-type sales environments, and will also probably teach you a lot that you didn't know about buying a car.
Confessions of a car salesman
Good article. Almost makes you feel sorry for the salesmen. I will definitely look at them differently next time I go to buy a car. Usually I am pretty rude and they leave me alone. One good thing about Wisconsin is the lots can't sell cars on Sunday so I usually look then when I am shopping for a car.
Deward
My old roommate sold Nissans. He'd always be mad about his job. Sometimes he was pissed at his managers or the dealership because of the dishonest or plain stupid things he was required to do.
Other times he'd be mad about his customers. Maybe one guy had done his research and lowballed him on a deal. Another guy, after getting the bed liner removed surrepticiously from his new truck, called the owner and got my roommate in trouble.
In all, he bought into the whole game and went to motivational seminars, read sales books, and always felt that one day he'd be that one salesman who lived in a million-dollar home and drove nicer cars than he sold. It never happened, though. In a fit of anger he quit one day, and now he installs garage door openers. . .
Yeah, I feel bad for car salespeople.

The Boney King of Nowhere.
Yeah, interesting article. I guess I fall into the "caucasian" category pretty firmly.. I'll look around a lot for comparable pricing, check the blue book value on cars for trade-in, then shoot for a little under a reasonable sticker price for cash. Though, at the point I'm willing to make an offer I know the sticker isn't inflated anyway =)
Sales is a farking awful job, unless you're the type of soulless greaser that's really good at it..
