USA a country of choice
You have to be kidding. There's only two things you listed that you would still have to pay if you did not choose to drive, taxes on roads, and taxes for police. And, it seems like a good bit of the tax on gas goes to raod maintence, so you don't even really pay much for the roads, which I'm sure you still benefit from whether you choose to drive or not. As far as the police, you should have to help pay for the police whether you drive or not, since they do a whole lot more than traffic patrol.Siji wrote:

If driving were truly a right, then even the blind would have it. That's the whole idea behind something being a "right," everyone has it, pretty much no matter what. Such as the right to vote, or free speech. It doesn't matter whether you are 18 or 80, blind, crippled, or crazy. Driving isn't even close to being a right.

The second you drive off in your car, you are a moving death machine. You can kill yourself, and more to the point, others EASILY. That's why it's a privilage.Siji wrote:I do and always have disagreed with driving being a privlege. I pay for a car. I pay taxes for that car. I pay for a license. I pay for a registration. I pay for the taxes of those. I pay for insurance. I pay for gas. I pay taxes for gas. I pay taxes for the roads. I pay taxes for the police. I pay taxes for everything else related to driving and owning a vehicle.Toshira wrote:Yeah, that's one of the few cases where I think the ACLU is out of line. Driving is a privledge, not a right.
I don't have a choice as to whether to do any of those. Sure a few go away if I don't have a car, but even then I'm still paying for the roads, the police, etc. If I can't drive, I shouldn't have to pay for anything related to it. But since I do, I have the right to drive.
And yes, if I fuck up and abuse my driving ability I can lose the freedom to do that. Just like if someone fucks up with a gun, they lose the freedom to do that. Or if someone fucks up with their children, they lose them.
When it becomes a privledge instead of a right to have children, then we'll talk about driving being a right or privledge.

This is true, but public transportation in America is not sophisticated enough that it reaches every place...It's actually almost impossible to live without driving...Skogen wrote: The second you drive off in your car, you are a moving death machine. For the oppressed, peace is the absence of oppression, but for the oppressor, peace is the absence of resistance.

Damn sounds like Xyun's 8-Ball just ran out
Normally I don't like to do this but... that's just fucking retarded and without and basis in fact and provably so; the best you can say is it's "inconvenient" to live without driving, attempting to qualify your statement with "almost" isn't nearly enough.Lohrno wrote:This is true, but public transportation in America is not sophisticated enough that it reaches every place...It's actually almost impossible to live without driving...Skogen wrote: The second you drive off in your car, you are a moving death machine. Tell me how do you get to Sand Point Idaho in a bus? Or Paonia Colorado? Please, show me the bus schedule...Zaelath wrote: Normally I don't like to do this but... that's just fucking retarded and without and basis in fact and provably so; the best you can say is it's "inconvenient" to live without driving, attempting to qualify your statement with "almost" isn't nearly enough.

No one needs to get to Sand Point, Idaho to survive.Lohrno wrote:Tell me how do you get to Sand Point Idaho in a bus? Or Paonia Colorado? Some qualification that you need to commute there, or other jackassery doesn't cut it either.. if you can't find work anywhere else, move there.
Imagine this: You're stuck in Sand Point because your asshole friend got drunk, and left you there. (I'm not implying you or I have friends like this, it's purely hyppothetical, and far fetched, but an example nonetheless.) You left your wallet in his car, and only have 5 bux. You don't have other friends. You need to get home to Seatte. What would you do?Zaelath wrote: No one needs to get to Sand Point, Idaho to survive.

Yes, I will move in order to live on top of the rest of the dumbasses in the city.
Forget the fact that I like to breate first thing in the morning without checking a particulate count first.
Nevermind the fact that there isn't a form of pollution on the planet worse than concentrating seawge in a confined area.
And hey, I can eat all that steriod-injected beef and chicken, right alongside the rest of the boys!
Tip----if you have never been more than fifteen minutes away from a pay phone, you have seen less than 20% of America and are unqualified to speak on transportation issues.
