The new DT album was leaked today...

Post by Xaem »

...And I must say it is fucking awesome! A must-buy for you DT fans (when it comes out, I'm going to buy it too of course but I just couldn't wait to hear the material!), and a really good progressive metal album for you people who don't know much about DT. Great stuff.

Dream Theater. If you're a progressive rock fan you should probably get this album. It's a bit more metally than usual too, so if you're a metal fan you'd probably like it too.

Okay, I may not be up on my classifications of music. Do you have any other examples of bands that would be called progressive rock?

:D :D :D :D :D :D

As far as what progressive rock is...without a "technical" definition handy, I guess I know it when I hear it. Usually fairly "hard" rock, but softened by extensive use of harmonies and keyboards, also often with thought provoking or intelligent lyrics.

Dream Theater is the current king of progressive rock. Other well known prog bands in the past have been Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull and King Crimson.

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime. Now there's a progressive metal record of ungodly quality.

The new DT-album is better than 6doit, but not as good as I hoped for. A very good album none the less. Thank god La Brie kept his wailing down a tad, it's just not his thing anymore.

And yay for me, I get to see them perform it in Jan. :)

Empire is better! (I don't really like QR at all though but if I HAD to choose a good album...)

Yeah THANK GOD Labrie doesn't scream all that much on this album heh I hear you there.

It can suck if you dislike Pink Floyd, Rush, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Symphony X, Derek Sherinian, Steve Morse (some of his solo projects anyways), Liquid Tension or even Tool. If you dislike those guys you probably dislike a good deal of progressive rock. I don't really think QR is very progressive, they are just a band that tries to play progressive-like songs... with a high-pitched singer. As albums I don't really see any QR stuff as progressive.

Anyway, I've noticed who most people that enjoy progressive metal and Dream Theater in general are the people who play intrsuments themselves. They oftenly have a higher knowledge of whats musically good and not and skillwise I can't find a band that's better than DT.

Btw the new album's growing on me, it's pretty damn good. :)

Btw, I have to props for local band that some of you perhaps know about (they have toured with Tool). If you like DT but think the high pitch singing isn't for you and you want speed and growl, yet highly complex music dl some Meshuggah. They are known as the "tightest" band in the world and if you listen to them you might get what they mean.

Highlights:

- Future breed machine
- Sane
- Gods of rapture
- New millenium cyanide christ
- Soul burn
Fegis - Valhall

I'd have to agree there. Guitar player myself, I have the utmost respect for this band's raw skill. Simply amazing.

I like this album. Much better then Inner Turbulence imo. I'd call it a mix between 6 doit and scenes from a memory.
