The following is the text of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's statement Wednesday in which he said Italy would not be intimidated by the car bomb in Iraq that killed at least 14 members of the Italian military and eight Iraqis.
"Pain is at this time a feeling shared by the entire nation. A deep pain for lives cut short by terrorism during a mission of humanity and freedom, in the service of the Iraqi people and in defense of stability and security in the Middle East.
"But we also feel pride for the courage and humanity with which our troops, the Carabinieri foremost among them, have worked and still work to make the situation tolerable for children, women, the elderly and the weak who live in that region, martyred by 34 years of a heinous regime and now also by terrorism.
"Our determination is the same as that of the Italians in uniform who with honor are helping the coalition that is working to sustain Iraq in its road toward democracy. No intimidation will budge us from our willingness to help that country rise up again and rebuild itself with self-government, security and freedom.
