Earth & Beyond

Post by Xouqoa »

Anyone in the beta for this besides me? I just got into it... was wondering how long it stays fun for. I flew around some last night and did the newbie missions/tutorial and had a blast. It's like ten times better than Jumpgate. Jumpgate was a good idea, but got too tangled up in being realistic and stuff... was damn near impossible to land at a space station in that game.

Talked with Loramar the other day about this very thing. I think he said he is going to give it a shot but I decided to wait until SWG comes out.

I played my ex boyfriend's beta for a bit. It was okay for awhile but suffered from a long term lack of content. When people say it is like Everquest in space they aren't fucking around with you. Imagine sitting in your space ship with about 20 other people all floating around dead in space waiting for a rare mission goal to spawn and you all open up your guns hoping to destroy it first.

I don't want to criticize it too hard though because it is still pretty early in the beta. My ex said that they just did a player wipe last week and added in like 100x more content and a bunch of new features, so who knows it could be a lot more fun.

Graphics sure are nice.

I have been testing this for the past few months. So far I have been enjoying the game a lot. As for long term enjoyability, it is hard for me to say, being that westwood has done a few player wipes during the testing phase, I have not been able to get any character exceptionally high in level. Leveling up is a breeze, which is nice considering so many class based skills are only acquired through gaining levels. There are plenty of creatures to fight if you decide to go along a warrior type route. And at the same time, there are tons of items that can be created if you choose to go along a trader route. Look me up in E&B if you have any questions or just feel like joining up for something. My character name is Jakob on their US East server.

I played it for about 3 hours total. I've never been a big fan of flyers in general, making it MMO didn't help.

So, can you fly around and do combat like you can in say, X-Wing or Wing Commander?

I mean it would be cool if you could get a lil twitch factor out of the game. Also, I think it would be cool that if you are in a group and you are the pilot, the others are just passengers and have to depend on your ability to fly. Maybe they can man guns or something to make them feel useful or something. Then you get to your planet or moon or whatever and you get to stay with the ship while the ground pounders go out hunting and you still get exp because you are part of the group. Just some ideas.

To me there's just something captivating about flying around in space charting out unknown areas... but I suppose it's not for everyone. I think I'll keep up with the beta if it's early in and see how it develops. I dislike the lack of joystick usability, though. ><

Still looking forward to EVE the most out of the upcoming Space RPGs.

Dont waste your time

Post by Xanupox »

I would say don't waste your time with this one. Yeah its nice for the first few hours, but then its the same old thing over and over with a slight twist either in graphics or text.

You can play any of three races, A)superhuman warriors, b)regular humans or some c)intelligent humaniods.

Basically its a game with three modes, A)combat, b)trade and c)exploration and its done best respectively by the above race.

The combat part is ok but becomes very old very quick, basically you let your shields power to 100% pick a target, warp in on it to point blank range then hold down the "blaster" key till either you or him explode. If you have time you quickly "loot" or extract any salvagable gear unless whoever you just blew up's 5 pals are not already blowing you to bits.

The Trade part is lame, its a game of get and go, warping around and depending on your ISP and hardrive load speed can get old real quick. Buy low and sell high, get trade missions from NPC, bla bla.. similar to the EQ Bard Newletter missions where you just travel around for nothing, end is a few galactic credits so you can buy a level 2 blaster for your ship.

Lastly the explorer is what I played, you level up by exploring so just pick NAV points on the map and ZOOM away... after about 3 worm holes you start to see that the life of the explorer will get old fast. You hardly ever stay in one location long, your ships have hardly any offensive power and meeting friends is well, not easy.

As far as the multiplayer part.. yeah there are players in this game the main effect they have is flooding and spamming the chat channels that appear at the top of the screen. Once you figure out how to filter the "general chat" and "newbie channel" then its less of an anoyance.

The majority of the game you spend looking out of the cockpit of your ship and trying to navigate the universe on a very poor charting system. The only time you ever see your "character" out of the ship is when you dock, but at that time you are limited to only speaking to NPCs and getting upgrades/repairs and missions. There is NO out of ship combat or gaming experience available.

This game would be a good single player game if it had some mission objective, but as a multiplayer game it has no point at all. You are so spread out in space that you hardly ever see anyone else more than once, the game was a good idea but implemented wrong.

I beta tested this game for the last few months, had a character in the mid levels of the game, I think level 150 is max.. you can gain up to 50 levels in each category Combat, Trade and Exploration...and are rewarded with a title that means nothing.

My vote is skip this one and play, "Mafia" by Illusion Softworks, to pass the free time you may have.

I hate to register just to post this...THIS GAME IS WORTHLESS!!! If theres two hours of my life that I could get back, it would have been the two hours I wasted playing E&B. There is no interaction with other people. The only reason that it's MM is just so you can show off your uber leet ship to anyone who might be docked near you. This is a MM game that plays like a shitty single player game...avoid it at ALL costs

Wow, you played it for a whole two hours and formed a decisive opinion about it? Perhaps if you played through the tutorial you would have figured out how to interact with other people.. I haven't had any problems with it.
