Thankfully, I was born North of the Mason-Dixon, so for majority of my life, I've not had to deal with the southern, rednecked mouthbreathers. When I was growing up, I had a confederate flag briefly because I liked the 'Dukes of Hazzard', but now that I understand what it means, I wouldn't be caught dead with one, or be seen with someone waving one.

Sure, it's not the Nazi flag, but it is a symbol that brings back memories of opression, forced servitude, and treating humans like animals. There might not have been as many people murdered so overtly, but I've got zero tolerance for what either flag represents.

The confederate flag as it is known today was the flag for the confederate navy. The original battle flag was square, and simply just that. A flag carried on the battle field, that had a few variations through the course of the war. Black men, as well as white, fought and died for that flag, for their homeland and for their rights.

It's truly a shame that the KKK and rednecks grasped that flag and attached to it the hatred it has today. For me, as a southerner, who had family that fought in the war, it is part of my heritage; and for the record, both sides of my family were poor, therefore they were not in the actual southern minority of black and white slave owners. Slavery was wrong imo, but the majority of the slave owners treated their slaves well, feeding them, housing them, clothing them, nursing them to health when they were sick. What did they have after the war? Poverty, worse living conditions than before and broken promises from the Union government.

No I'm not redneck, I am not racist, I don't agree with everything that went on in the pre war south. I am a person that has always had an interest in the civil war, I am a re-enactor, and I have done research past what I was taught in school. The issues around the war, the flag etc is something that will be debated in this country until the end of time most likely, as more people dig, and find out more information. But we weren't there, so I guess no one can truly know the full story of what went on...on either side.

Their freedom, well worth those hardships. It's like you are alluding to slaves getting the raw end of the deal by being set free.

Those conditions happened for the most part when they were freed during the war. My apologies for getting mixed up, I've read a ton lately, and got confused. They did get the raw end of the deal when freed during the war, but after it was over I agree, their freedom was worth the hardships they had to face.

The war was a chain of events starting with the secession of South Carolina from the union. They seceded for essentially two reasons:

A. Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was about to become president.

B. The northern states were in violation of the Constitution by freeing any slaves that escaped to them (rather than shipping them back as fugitives). And refusing to allow them to be transported through them.

After they seceded, the others followed. Lincoln went to war to re-unite the union. He says in one of his addresses that he would free the slaves, or not free the slaves to bring the union back together, whichever was necessary.
So, I don't see how you can say the war wasn't about slavery. If not for the slavery issue, they never would have seceded from the union. And the states united under that flag were united for the freedom to exercise slavery (intentional irony!).

The part of your post I have in Bold print is the reason for the war, slavery was the excuse to go to war. It was about uniting all of the states and as long as the South was prosperous which was by the hard work of the slaves they would stay independent and seperate and Lincoln knew that the one way to cripple the south was to take away what made the money. The industry was up North not in the South so they made their way thru slavery.
Lincoln didn't care one way or the other about the slaves, he just wanted to unite the country.
