Venti- you know good and well that Suns did not intentionally mean to make light of the situation you're facing. She- as someone you know very well- didn't deserve that level of response and tone from you. If you felt that strongly about it you should have given her a chance to make it clear without jumping on her.

Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.

I'm not going to try to marginalize the suffering of the people who's towns burned to the ground, but comparing it to something like 9/11 is kinda off base. Crazy Arabs haven't been flying passenger jets into skyscrapers for millions of years. Those forests in Cali have been burning as part of their natural system since long before people decided it would be a neato place to build a log cabin with a tar-shingle roof.

I agree. I really wasn't trying to draw any correlation other than 'something negative that impacts the posters here'. Obviously the scope is extremely different both in the effect and importance. I'm sorry if I gave any other impression.

When I was 10 years old, my sister kicked over a candle in her sleep - as a result, on father's day 12 years ago, our house burnt down. If she had spent 30 more seconds in her room, she would have been dead. That day, the only thing we really had left as a family was humor.

We lost *every* possession in the house. My house took over a year to rebuild. I remember living in a 3 bedroom beach house in the middle of winter (in NY) with 7 other family members. I remember shortly after the fire in our house was put out, being allowed to go in and see our house, but having problems finding shoes because I didn't bring any out with me. I remember walking through the wreckage of our house and seeing everything in ruins.

This sort of thing *does* hit close to home with me. My boyfriend (Karae) lives in Orange County as well which isn't that far from the fires. I'm not saying this to get some sort of sympathy from the Veeshanvault community, it happened a long time ago.

I was in shock yesterday when I saw Vegas skies - the fact that it could effect our skies from so far away. I saw Sunserae's comment, I took it for the humor value of it, and posted /agree Sunserae. I in no way was trying to offend anyone, I just saw the humor in Sunserae's comment.

I apologise to anyone I offended, it was not my intent.

Nice post Thess (and great paragraph structure!)

Almost my entire extended family on my mother's side lives in Southern California. Humor as an outlet for a grim situation is always touchy. I suppose it's best to take it case by case. Consider the forum (VV)

I would, and did, flip out over anyone joking about 911. Fat, skinny, ugly, mentally retarded, clueless (pils), CAPS, etc. No matter what you joke about, there is someone that will take it the wrong way and rightfully so. Each person has something that pushes their buttons. If you happen to get flamed because someone took exception, it creates a healthly flamefest and then all is well again.

If aranuil's home burned down, I don't think anyone would be joking about it if that fact was specifically posted...even if aranuil's relative's home burned down I doubt anynone would joke about it...but the overall situation in general is something that spot humor works sometimes on to deal with.

I'm no better than anyone, but I'd like to think that if any of you were in the middle of a natural disaster, serious personal strife, a terrorist incident, or whatever, I wouldn't make a joke about it at least until it was over and you/your loved ones were out of danger.
When I lived in Texas we got hit by an insane flood.. my apartment almost got flooded (I got damn lucky), but I joked about it. Hell I laughed my ass off when rain stopped for 5 minutes and I drove my motorcycle through 5 inches of standing water to get a pizza because I was out of food!

People react to things differently. Nobody should really attack another person for how they react or deal with a situation. Read Thess' post a few times, I think it explains things fairly well.

Hello yall

This past weekend was nuts. I live in Riveriside which is in the area of the fires but not close enough to be effected in the way we have been this last weekend and week. The smoke literally covered what we call the Inland Empire/ 909 out here. It literally seemed like the fire was in my backyard and it is about 25 miles away! I think it was Pah that live is in Alta Loma. I work in Rancho Cucamonga which is pretty close and it was snowing ash for a couple days. Craziest thing I have seen. An old eqer friend of mine, well his parents house burned(They live close to Lake Arrowhead) and my daughter and her mom were evacuated from their house for a couple days. Haha just had to vent. Its been nuts.. all this and I just came by to say Hi!

Venti wrote:Well Truant,

In saying I wasn't replying to you, I meant in my first post, where I referenced the vote thing. You choose not to see that, whatever.
Well of course your first reply wasn't addressed to me. But that's not what you said, until NOW. If that makes me stupid for not being able to read your mind, then OH NO!
Venti wrote:Your (whoever)opinion of what I am, or am not trying to prove is of absolutely no consequence. You appear to be operating under the false pretense that I value your opinion in this regard. I don't; so to avoid confusion on your part, please adjust your expectations.
If my opinion is meaningless to you, then why are you still replying?
Venti wrote:I do find it amazingly funny however, that in your post yesterday, you quote me from what has to be 6-12 motnhs ago, and my opinion of this place and it's chronic posters. I'm left to wonder, if this was meant to draw up some level of reinforcement from those that would be offended by hearing that quote? If so, and I think that is the case, thats some terribly weak shit.
I have not, and will not, make any attempt to draw reinforcements in to save me on this board. I pick my own fights, and I expect to deal with them alone. Whether that be against someone I generally dislike, or against a friend I disagree with. The conclusion you draw is...interesting though, I guess....a bit far fetched and bizarre, but interesting.

I brought those statements of yours up, because your actions now, are contradicting your statements then. Now, you could have possibly changed your stance, and are now acting on your new feelings...but considering you're still acting as self righteous about these boards as you always have, I seriously doubt it, and just see you as being self contradictive.
Venti wrote:The bottom line for me, is I reacted to something that I didn't like. As mentioned in my first post, there's a lot of frustrations surrounding it for me that make me not find the joke funny. Anyone's agreement with my point if view is not required. Call me what you like, think what you will. I really just don't care.
And you're allowed not to like it, and you're allowed to express that. I only wanted to point out, that you did it in a way that made you out to be a giant ass. Then again, that's just my opinion...and you've stated at least twice now, on this thread alone...that you don't care about anyone's opinion.......and yet, you still are posting justifications.

I just wanted to pop in and just say to those
of you who live in or have family in the area
of/or near the disaster that I am sorry for your
losses and wish the best for you and your family/friends.

Thess, your post was nice. I'd had something
similar happen (yet I was much older) but can
understand what you mean when all you have
left is a handful of what you could get, your family
and good humor. I am sorry for your loss, even if
it was long ago. ;)

The pictures; in light of the damage they have
caused, were amazing and did give a more realistic
view to those in different areas. Thank you for
sharing them.

Hope the air clears soon, no pun intended :D

Best Wishes,
Rav

Well, I'm back...

Post by Lohrno »

After about a week. I live in Carlsbad, we didn't get hit by the fire, but it came within 5 miles of us on at least 2 different occaisions. On monday, seeing as the fires started being a threat sunday, we got up early in the morning to check on the news. There was not much about the fires near us (Fallbrook, and Paradise...) but a quick glance out the window showed fire a couple hills down. It was then that me and my family decided it was probably a good idea to go visit my grandparents in San Francisco. ;) The smoke was also bad for my daughter (I don't want her to get Asthma...). Several people were in the hospital even in areas that just got smoke because of it. I got back yesterday, after hearing the fires have been out. All the way up on the 5, we saw little fires. I'm just really glad it didn't come here. ;) The smoke was bad enough that people were complaining that during that time, their lungs started to hurt...(even non asthmatics...)

jesus christ, I was in Poland when all of this was happening. I see things on the news over there that are burning, and know the area its in, and knew how close it was to my house. Yet I am thousands of miles away, and can do nothing. I came back to find my immediate area ok, but a mere 1 mile away, houses are gone.

Downtown next to the liquor store across the street from neiman's, used to get the rolled taquitos there everyday on my way to the beach. Ahh, memories.

edit: apologies for waxing nostalgia but you really don't appreciate the mexican food until it's gone... glad to hear my favorite town is still okay, too

Oh! I think I know what you're talking about... they have like a yellow canopy, and tables outside right? I've never eaten there, but if that's the place, I've driven by it many a time...I take it they have good food? ;) I used to like the diner on Grand street, but the quality there deteriorated...
