Sky in California... at present.

Post by noel »

I'm currently 20 miles from the nearest fire. The air smells of smoke, and it's raining ash just about everywhere. It's actually not that bad where I am in Calabasas, if you go West and North though, visibility gets worse and worse. It's not overcast or cloudcover in the pics, it's smoke.

The smoke is very heavy here in San Diego county. We still have 3 fires burning and 1 more just over the Riverside/San Diego county border in Temecula. So many particles in the air. Hard to breathe.

This isnt related to the california fires, but the sky outside my house about 30mins ago(sunset) was overcast, yet the ENTIRE sky was glowing a brilliant pink/purple and the light everywhere was the same. My skin was pink, everything was. Was really friggin weird, Ive never seen something quite like it before. It lasted about 40 mins. I had to honor it by smoking a bit of hehe. It was quite nice.

The sky over here is like that every time the mines dump the slag. The entire sky turns an orange/pinkish color at night. It's something I enjoy looking at everytime it happens.

http://www.incident.com for information on 2 of the fires. We live in San Bernardino area and the fire came right up to the houses here. We were evacuated for 2 days, only thing that saved us was the tile roofs. Over 1100 homes are gone, 13 people dead and thousands of lives are a mess. Most of the fires were arson including the one that evacuated us. They are reporting 2 twenty something year olds in a gray chevy van were throwing flares from the car into the woods. My parents cabin in Arrowhead is in serious danger as are places in Malibu, Hemet, Temecula, Simi Valley, Devore, and a lot of San Diego.

Over the weekend we spent a day and a half watching the news, when they would show it. Mostly they played Andromeda and Mutant X shows. Pissed me off, they show a car chase for 4 straight hours breaking all shows so you can see the dude drive around, but thousands are sitting somewhere wondering if they have a home and we get to watch infomercials and syndicated TV. I called a TV station and was told it was a programing decision.
Anyway, I hope everyone in the area is ok. I have to say the fire and police dept did an amazing job here and if any of you are reading this, THANKS FOR SAVING OUR HOMES and for all the amazing work you have done.
Sorry for the long winded and rambling post but this one one literally hit home.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. Reminds me of when half od canada was on fire and the northeast got in the wind pattern. Sky looked exactly like that for as long as the wind blew in our direction. Scary shit that's always caused by some dolts camping or fools doing things like that flare throwing crap.

I'd be pretty fucking pissed if a wildfire called Paradise Fire burned down my house. I think if that happened, the first thing that would come to my mind would be, "I have no possessions or place to live. You call this Paradise? I want my money back."

Only there would be no refund because it's just a fire.

Bush needs to declare California a permanent disaster area or state that you live there at your own risk. Cali has more disasters than all the other states combined. Earthquakes, Floods, Mudslides, Fires, Fruit Flies, Sink holes....wtf.

I say we sell the state to canada for a dollar. (U.S Dollar, lets not be cheap!)

Heya Ash!! :D

To actually keep on topic... Those fires look waaaay worse than the ones that burned Malibu Canyon, Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach 10 or so years ago. :( I have some friends that live somewhat near the Simi/Moorpark fires and hope their homes are safe.

That air quality has got to be horrendous now (as if it wasn't bad enough without fires). :(

I think yesterday was mostly a minor shift in the wind where I'm at. It's definitely FAR worse in other areas, and currently there's still very little that's 'contained'. My car was covered in ash this morning, and I could smell the smoke within my house... and I'm in one of the areas that's been totally untouched by the actual fires...

I figured the pics might be interesting for people who aren't getting to see it. I am kind of wishing more people would take pictures of for lack of a better term: 'things going on in their area', because I think it would make for some interesting posting... Looking forward to seeing your pics Paruh... what part of Cali are you in?

I'll scrounge up some pics too. I took a few myself of Saturday night's fire (which eventually turned into the Simi Valley fire once it went over the hill) and then all the fun on Sunday with new fires that popped up in the area.

Now I just need to find some place to host them... ;)

I stepped out this afternoon and saw the hills above my house which is in Alta Loma. If anyone watched CNN when the reporter was interviewing the fireman on thursday or friday and the wall of flame jumped up the hill underneath them and they had to run for cover, that was about 2 miles or so from where I live. The hills, which are normally dark green or sienna are now blackened and charred. The view of the mountains, whose peaks are less than 8 miles, straight shot, from my backyard are engulfed in a haze, the likes of which I haven't seen in many years. Looking towards the east, the clear edges of the smoke clouds cut across the already murky sky. I watched as something in the Cajon Pass area exploded, sending a small black cloud into the air. The sun, usually bright and clear in the sky is obscured by the clouds of ash and smoke.

I'm looking for a digital camera as I post this. I hope to get the images in before it gets too dark to see the sky, but it truly is a sight to behold.

On another note: just under a dozen friends have lost their homes in this fire. Another dozen or so have severe fire damage to their yards/homes but will be able to salvage it. As the fire climbs the mountains towards Lake Arrowhead, Cedar Glen, Green Valley Lake and Big Bear, I fear that some more friends will find themselves homess due to this blaze.

I have no doubt that Southern California will endure this disaster, however by the time this ends, the destruction will be immense. I'll get pics and post them as I can, but if any of you have gods that you keep, pray for the people suffering due to this tragedy. At this point, they need all the help they can get.

EDIT: Got some pics, will post them tonight.

I have sympathy for all Californians; being from Alberta, Canada though, its almost hard to say that this fire so far is nothing compared to the fire that ravaged B.C., it lasted the entire summer.

Right now we have a snow storm though, no fires here :)
