"I think it's outrageous," Steigerwalt, a lawyer and a Democrat, says of the increased fee. He will pay $812 in April to register his 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser, up from $295 this year.
Holy shit, that's insane. I drive a similar car to the one listed (I'm guessing), and it's like $100 a year in Michigan for registration. Does that cost include any other registration fees, or are those separate?

Is this a one time registration fee wen the car is new/or changes hands or is it annual at those obscene levels?

Oh my heart bleeds for the people driving SUV's in California, I'm sure they have to drive through 6 foot snow drifts just to get out of the driveway in January.. wankers.

Now if you really want to get pissed off, look at the registration rates on semi-trailers v's car/motorcycle, then look at the amount of damage a semi does to the road v's said car/motorcycle...

Up here I pay $65 cdn to register my car once at the time of purchase and that's it.

Canadians pay a higher tax on gas however. The local government has to get money for things like transit and road maintenence from somewhere. Although lately you guys aren't even getting much of a better deal on gas either.

That's not entirely true, just cost me $43 to register my car, up from $36 last year. Our gas tax is also very low. Not exactly sure how we pulled that one off as we seem to be the highest in nearly every other tax/gouge.

Then again, maybe NJ isn't exactly what conclsion you jump to when you're thinking of coastal locals

Registering my Triumph: $40

Registering my Honda: $215.

How much those assholes are going to want next year, I'll have to wait and see.

This year it cost me $299.00 to register my 2000 Tacoma for 1 year.

Next week, I register my Tacoma in Oregon for ~$37 for 2 years.

Not sure on that...I just know that Oregon property taxes are high... but considering the low land and housing costs, it doesn't seem that bad.

Not sure on state income tax though....

Oregon's state income tax is through the roof...something like 4 times CA's. No state sales tax, though, so it evens out somewhat.

Washington has no state income tax (w00tz!), though we do pay sales tax.
I paid $100 when I first moved here to register my 99 Saturn, and about $65 this last year.

The insane vehicle registration taxes in CA are all the more reason to leave that earthquake-ridden festering shithole of a state, in my opinion.

2 years CA-free this month! :D

Fees for things in CA are just rediculous anyhow. There is actually a statute which says you have to PAY to get a payoff quote on your mortgage. Gawd I hated that one when I was handling foreclosures.

Cali resident here. Last year my 93 Jeep was about $75 to reg , I am scared for this May. Canelek, Dirt Farm ?? dude you are thinking of the Central Valley and mainly Bakersfield. Sad part is its now cheaper to live in So Cal than the Bay area now. When I left Ventura 6yrs ago , rent on a great 2bd apt about 1/2mi from the coast was $800 , when I got back up here , same place would run aprox $1k. I miss that area but wouldnt move back. The people are SO different when you cross the mountains into So Cal.
Easy solution to the reg tax is buy from a owner Not a dealer. Most every car I have sold I have made a bill of sale for like $100 and had people do the same. What a saving grace on registration fee's. I didnt get that luxury when I bought this one though , damn financing (at 20% , thanx bankruptcy) Try making annything less than 50k a yr and living on your own out here , and on top of that try raising a kid on your own. IN the Midwest or south I would be considered a "yuppie" but here Phugg=White Trash. Ya know what though , I have my son and am happy regaurdless of the fact that I am Beyond broke most of the time.

ps , No shovelling snow EVER !! just one of the benefits of the coastal life

Ohh yeah, you mean the people that like to ruin the future to get an extra $100 a year in your pocket for a nice dinner.

uhh nope. NJ is still reeling from the dogshit that Whitman pulled (our former governer).

Out state tax isn't so bad, doens't really amount to too much overall, however the property taxes are a thing of legend out here :x

Outside of the immediate SF Bay-San Jose area and LA I really liked CA. Dump everything to the left of the major fault lines and it'd be a nice place :)

I live in Sacramento. I am about to bail; shit is just out of hand now.

If you have a 30k vehicle, you will pay 600 a year.

A 40k vehicle will cost you 800 a year.

Home prices have jumped sky high. A 3bd 2 ba 1600sft home built in 1985 with a pool in back will cost you 300k. Five years ago, it would cost you 200k.

The salaries have not increased either!!

If I did not have kids, I would already be out of this shit hole.

The thing is, the inflated market will take a dump at some point. Folks will be in the position people in SF were in ~15 years ago. I know folks that are just getting in the black on houses they couldn't get rid of back then.

Registration here is not too bad (Falla covered those numbers). The thing that kills is the personal property tax every year. The older the vehicle, the less it is of course, but the first year of a 20k vehicle might run you over 1k in personal property taxes and you get to pay a lesser amount each year after that.

Boats? Those are good. Personal property tax on the boat, the engine, the trolling motor and the trailer.

Basically, there is no incentive what so ever to own a new vehicle in Missouri, which if you think about it, is a terrible policy for a state that is the nations second largest producer of motor vehicles behind MI.

Oh, and our roads are among the worst in the nation.

Thank goodness the state constitution says the government can only collect so much on income tax.

Just wait until the Property Taxes come due :/

btw, I am hoping most people are smart enough to not let their property taxes fall behind in LA County...they are the fucking worst. They will make a 2-5 year payment plan with you, then turn around to your mortgage company and say they are going to have a Tax Sale on your property in order to get the money sooner.

I don't hate Californians, I hate California.
