Holy shit! This is messed up!

Associated Press
PINSON, Ala. -- A Pinson man was charged with attempted murder for holding a gun to his son's head and pulling the trigger in the midst of a tantrum after Alabama's double overtime loss to Arkansas Saturday.

The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Seth Logan, who said he picked the wrong time to ask his dad for a car, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Randy Christian said Monday.

Joseph Alan Logan, 46, surrendered to police Saturday and was charged with attempted murder and domestic violence. He was released from the Jefferson County jail Sunday on $7,500 bond.

"I know we take football serious in the South," Christian told The Birmingham News for a Tuesday story, "but that's crossing the line."

The request upset Joseph Logan because his son has already wrecked several vehicles, Logan told investigators.

"He claimed he was just trying to scare his son," Christian said.

According to the police report, Joseph Logan had been drinking alcohol and began slamming doors, tossing boxes and throwing dishes in the sink after the Crimson Tide lost its football game to Arkansas, 34-31 in double overtime Saturday.

While Joseph Logan was throwing the tantrum, Seth Logan asked for a new car.

Joseph Logan then retrieved a 9 mm pistol from his car, grabbed his son by the collar and pressed the gun to his son's forehead, the report said.

Logan threatened to shoot his son in the head, then pulled the trigger.

Seth Logan moved his head just as his father fired and the bullet whizzed past him, the report said.

Seth Logan fled to a neighbor's house to call police. He told police his ear was numb and his head ringing, but he was OK.

Sheriff's authorities called the SWAT team after discovering the armed father still had a 13-year-old son in the house with him.

Joseph Alan Logan walked out of the house with the other son and turned himself in to police just before the SWAT team arrived, Christian said.

And California shouldn't exist. Move along into the Pacific already.

This is also Alabama we're talking about. Almost on par with Arkansas regarding intelligence level.

Really, this type of behavior is seen all over the world. Having grown up in Arkansas, I can certainly see that point...some messed up folks in the sticks. There and Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, California, etc... California being the worst as far as strange crimes goes, given.

Pretty much every state is chock full of weirdos and wackos...hard to blame just one state, province, etc..

re-reading the article it sounds like they had enough trauma going on in the family as it was. To hell with the football game (which was a good one). The son had wrecked several vehicles and had the nerve to ask his dad for another one when he would have KNOWN his dad was already pissed off.

The part that's really fucked up is that the 13 year old son got involved as a human shield. That is where this story is screwy.

As for the comments about locations, mine was made in jest since 1/3 of the people in Austin are from California it seems. They all talk about how glad they are that they aren't there any more. It also comes from knowing how the California government works (nothing to do with the recall). The people who express the anti-South/Confederacy sentiments just need to grow the fuck up and look around you. There are probably worse crimes going on around you that don't make the "headlines." Ever read In Cold Blood? True story, happened in Kansas, was on the side of the Union in the Civil War.

PS: oh, and the sheep are only scared in the Bryan/College Station area ;)

It does, but it seems to happen a hell of a more often here in the US than anywhere else.

Yeah it's not screwy to put a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger..

I do agree that it is mainly in the US where these things happen, I was just trying to point out that the US South should not be singled out for fucked up behavior. I have seen more really messed up things during my 4 years in Los Angeles than I have seen anywhere I have ever lived or visited. And that is all WITHOUT the Raiders being here...

And speaking of sports-related incidents, I do believe soccer takes the cake in this category... :P

I live in Arkansas and their are some very intelligent people here but I will also agree that their are some true idiots out in the sticks. However from what I've seen around the country it's not much different from anywhere else, they are just not called rednecks but something else.

I loved growing up in Little Rock, but I do remember some areas that had 90% morons (at least Southwest City and the bad hoods surrounding downtown back then). However, West Little Rock is fantastic! I have not been back there since 1991 so I am sure it has grown a ton.

I tell ya though, when I played football there in high school, we used to visit some real backwater-cornfed towns...like BAUXITE!

I went to Boy's State back in 87 for the "future leaders of Arkansas." When I got back home I wanted to move away :) There were some really cool, smart people but there were definitely a higher percentage of people that were complete morons, literally. If they were some of the best and brightest from those cornfed po-dunk school it was pretty sad. Witnessing State legislature today I realize it was true, heh.

Typically rediculous argument, sarcasm or no, that is actually used by the NRA. Cars are not *designed* to kill shit, guns are. The comparison is flawed.

Greetings:This is the Secretary of War at the State Department
of the United States
We have a problem.
The companies want something done about this sluggish
world economic situation
Profits have been running a little thin lately
and we need to stimulate some growth
Now we know
there's an alarmingly high number of young people roaming
around in your country with nothing to do but stir up trouble
for the police and damage private property.
It doesn't look like they'll ever get a job
It's about time we did something constructive with these people
We've got thousands of 'em here too. They're crawling all over
The companies think it's time we all sit down, have a serious get-together-
And start another war
The President?
He loves the idea! All those missiles streaming overhead to and fro
Napalm
People running down the road, skin on fire
The Soviets seem up for it:
The Kremlin's been itching for the real thing for years.
Hell, Afghanistan's no fun
So whadya say?
We don't even have to win this war.
We just want to cut down on some of this excess population
Now look. Just start up a draft; draft as many of those people as you can.
We'll call up every last youngster we can get our hands on,
hand 'em some speed, give 'em an hour or two to learn how to use
an automatic rifle and send 'em on their way
Libya? El Salvador? How 'bout Northern Ireland?
Or a "moderately repressive regime" in South America?
We'll just cook up a good Soviet threat story
in the Middle East-we need that oil
We had Libya all ready to go and Colonel Khadafy's hit squad
didn't even show up. I tell ya
That man is unreliable.
The Kremlin had their fingers on the button just like we did for that one
Now just think for a minute-We can make this war so big-so BIG
The more people we kill in this war, the more the economy will prosper
We can get rid of practically everybody on your dole queue if we plan this right.
Take every loafer on welfare right off our computer rolls
Now don't worry about demonstrations-just pump up your drug supply.
So many people have hooked themselves on heroin
and amphetamines since we took over, it's just like Vietnam.
We had everybody so busy with LSD they never got too strong.
Kept the war functioning just fine
It's easy.
We've got our college kids so interested in beer
they don't even care if we start manufacturing germ bombs again.
Put a nuclear stockpile in their back yard,
they wouldn't even know what it looked like
So how 'bout it? Look-War is money.
The arms manufacturers tell me unless
we get our bomb factories up to full production
the whole economy is going to collapse
The Soviets are in the same boat.
We all agree the time has come for the big one, so whadya say?!?
That's excellent. We knew you'd agree
The companies will be very pleased.

Haha, yeah!

on a side/side note, this is somewhat close:

Kill The Poor
Efficiency and progress is ours once more
Now that we have the Neutron bomb
It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done
Away with excess enemy
But no less value to property
No sense in war but perfect sense at home:

The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight

Gonna
Kill kill kill kill Kill the poor:Tonight

Behold the sparkle of champagne
The crime rate's gone
Feel free again
O' life's a dream with you, Miss Lily White
Jane Fonda on the screen today
Convinced the liberals it's okay
So let's get dressed and dance away the night

While they:
Kill kill kill kill Kill the poor:Tonight

Also, I gave up on defending the South when I remembered that is where country music comes from!

This is the part I was referring to. While he may not have intended to use the son as a human shield, the fact that a SWAT team was called in makes it look more like a hostage situation.
