The American Social Health Association estimates that as many as 80 percent of adults in the United States have oral herpes, while 20 percent have genital herpes. Fully 90 percent are unaware they have the virus. There is no cure.
Scary shit.

4/5 adults have oral herpes and 1/5 have genital herpes?

"Herpes infections produce a number of different signs and symptoms. Traditional "first episode" herpes, most commonly described in women, are serious illnesses, with high fever, often large-sized outbreaks, and even inability to urinate. Hospitalizations are sometimes necessary, with urinary bladder catheterization, IV fluids, and intravenous anti-viral medications being required. Most people who present with infection don’t describe such a first onset illness, however, showing up in the office or the ER with a cluster of small blisters surrounded by a red base showing up on the genitalia, in the case of GHI. Often the blisters have already ruptured, leaving behind a cluster of ulcers which required one to two weeks to heal."

"...GHI (genital herpes infection ) IS contagious. The method of transmission is usually through an active herpetes blister with a broken area of skin. A male with an open blister could transmit the virus into the vagina of a female through a tiny abrasion in the mucosa of the female that would occur during intercourse. Similar modes of transmission can occur from female to male, male to male, and even female to female. Oral to oral transmission of either type of virus can happen. The virus may be transmitted to the penis, the vagina, the rectum, the mouth, the esophagus, the trachea, and even onto broken areas of skin anywhere. "
So not only is it contagious sexually, but if someone has OHI (oral herpes infection) and performed oral sex on a partner, they could give them genital herpes. It happened to a friend of mine in fact.

In Canada, anyone with GHI is registered by their doctor and there are legal implications if they have sex with a partner and do not inform them of the illness first. Pregnancy is tricky for women who have herpes as it could be passed to the baby during childbirth and the effects on the child's brain are just horrible.

This is a yucky disease.

That's genital herpes (HS2). Cold sores are caused by HS1, which is a much less nasty virus.

Genital is cause by both, though HSV-2 is nastier
Genital herpes is caused either by HSV-1 or its sister virus HSV-2. In general, an individual with HSV-1 in the genital area has fewer and less severe outbreaks of lesions than someone with HSV-2 in the genital region.
http://www.racoon.com/herpes/
There is a pretty decent read on the differences between the two here: http://www.herpes.com/hsv1-2.html

I knew it could be transmitted orally because my girlfriend's boyfriend (in his ignorance) wrongly accused her of cheating on him when she found out she had genital herpes. Later the doctor tested the "boyfriend" and pointed out he had actually infected her
