Upgrade DirectX
Update video card drivers
If you use Windows XP and haven't installed the service pack, I suggest you do.
Also when asking for computer help, next time mention as much information you can give us techies. I gave pretty broad help. If I knew your video card, direct x version, and operating system. I might have been able to help you in more detail.

The U is for 'Update 3d Devices' and the /y is for 'Yes'

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
Try:
Right click desktop, choose properties. Window will open, up top on the far right will be a tab that says settings click that. Down on the bottom right hand side there will be a button called advanced click the button. That will bring up a new window there should be a tab at top called Troubleshoot ,choose that. In the middle of that window there will be a hardware acceleration slider. Make sure it is all the way to the right (or at the full mark). Then hit apply and click ok on all the windows to close em out. After that start eq and see if it works.

I suggest you call your local techie friend and beg them to do a fresh install of an operating system you have handy... hopefully Windows XP.
If you are in the La Jolla area of San Diego California by chance, I can come by and fix it up. I charge $20 for drive there and the first hour, $20 each additional hour.
P.S. That message your getting is because there is nothing on your hardrive, it is wiped clean.
If you want to attempt installing the operating yourself and have an operating system CD. Put it in and hopefully it will ask if you want to boot from cd, choose yes and choose to install the operating system.
You only will need to boot to cd that first time, after that it'll ask you to reboot and when it starts up again just let it find the installation that is working on your hardrive.
Here is a website that can tell you step by step how to install Windows XP.

Let me know if you have a different operating system you want to install, I can try to help you find a step by step tutorial on said operating system.

It is rare talent to totally take advantage of someone who asks for help - grats you two!
Alusus, it looks like Paruhdox got you covered but I'll offer to help too. Send me a message if you need a hand or have questions. If you live in Canada get a copy of an Operating system to install on your computer, fire me your number (if you are comfortable doing so) and I'll be glad to get someone to walk you through it setup over the phone.
Unfortunately, unless you've got some $$$ to throw away, chances are you have lost anything that was on that box.![Crying or Very sad ](./images/smilies/cry.gif)

Bleh... Maybe it's because I work in a highly technical environment, and most of the people I know are overly computer literate, but I NEVER imagined he would actually do that. I don't know one person who doesn't know what formatting is. ><
At any rate. I can't recover your data Alusus, but it says you live in MN. PM me, and we can work something out. I'd be happy to call you (on my nickel) and help you get your OS and drivers in order, just let me know. I've walked people through installing all of that before, so I can definitely help you if you need.
I honestly never thought you'd format your drive.

I used to have my BBS set up with an option that was 'hidden' (but not really, anyone could get to it) that loaded an ASCII animation/menu that looked like a shell to DOS. Then you could type DIR and stuff like that to change directories to load games and what not. It was harmless, but neat. I also made a FORMAT C: option so that if someone typed it in (and they did quite often) that it would look like it formatted my HD and then would disconnect them. =) I got quite few hangups in the middle of calls whenever they did that.Kguku wrote:I've been trying to get someone to format their hard-drive for years on IRC. That's unfair.Winnow wrote:You guys are mean.
A harmless prank would be telling people to type /ex to get their experience total in EQ. Formatting someone's HD is a bit much unless they were being a jacklass which doesn't seem to be the case here.

I addressed his problem, and he's not getting the error message anymore. He also learned a new command.

Nope. I was absolutely being a sarcastic ass when I made initial postings. I did not think ANYONE would not know what format was, and genuinely feel bad if he did in fact format. As I stated, I will more than happy to help him get back up and running if he actually did format.

UNDELETE /LIST
alternatively, for those who delete a file on accident.
type in:
RECOVER A:\DOCS\MYFILE.TXT (change path as needed)
edit: nm, these commands dont work for Windows 9X, still leavin for some usefull information tho~
