Important: Dixie Chicks update!
Agreed, however they people who have a popular image (political celebrity) are expected to make statements for politics and to use their image. However people like the dixie chicks go up on stage and when you are expecting something about music (job related?) they say somethign about politics. Completely useless. Missuse of an image.
To me it's not that they shouldn't, EVERYONE should use what influence they have if they believe their cause is just.
Isn't this EXACTLY what you are all arguing AGAINST when a politician mentions religion?Using your image and celebrity to express your ideals is the very soul of politics.
To answer Xyun's question: They shouldn't use thier musical celebrity to push thier political views because it's NOT THIER GIG - the music is. The same reason that politicians aren't supposed to not push thier religious views - it's NOT THIER JOB - representing thier constituancy is.
Yet they all do... and we can, and will, bitch about it all day long - and at the end of the day they're still ALL DOING IT.

what about music with a political agenda such as RATM?
say what you want to say, and your fans will take it as they will and your career will go as it goes imo, if someone starts a band and wants to bring back the 3rd reich(sp) and put a new fhurur(sp) in power then good for them, but im not going to support them

I think only the pettiest, whiniest militant athiest would give a fuck whether or not some lawmaker was a religous man. It's when they use their authority (read: authority, not influence or popularity) to circumvent things like the constitution or whatever else dictates policy on how the government interacts with the church.Ashur [FoH] wrote:Isn't this EXACTLY what you are all arguing AGAINST when a politician mentions religion?

Because Ahnuld is a Teutonic stud-miffin and Babs is a talentless hag who is only popular because she's Jewish?kyoukan wrote:One thing I've noticed is that people don't seem to complain about celebrities expousing their politics when they agree with them. I've never seen a conservative bitch about arnold who's been an active and vocal supporter of the GOP since the reagen administration. But whenever Babs Streisand opens her cock hole and says something stupid they start dry humping each other over how celebrities shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion about anything.

If your founding fathers had put in checks to seperate celebrity and politics then your comparison to the seperation of church and state would be appropriate.Ashur [FoH] wrote:Isn't this EXACTLY what you are all arguing AGAINST when a politician mentions religion?

Maybe, and only when speaking of divine authority Kyou.
You're probably going to reply with something like how cops have authority, but they can't influence people to look the other way when they break the law or something. Authority is granted by those who use influence as a means of conducting politic.

WTF is divine authority? I've never witnessed such a thing so please elaborate.
It is not the same at all. Politicians are bound by law and a moral code not to push religion, neither is true for celebrities and their political views. The Dixie Chicks did nothing more than espouse their opinion, which btw a majority of the world agrees with. They may have chosen the wrong place, time, or profession to do it in, but they were not wrong in doing so. The way your argument comes across to me is because they are celebrities, they should no longer exercise their freedom of speech. They shouldn't use thier musical celebrity to push thier political views because it's NOT THIER GIG - the music is. The same reason that politicians aren't supposed to not push thier religious views - it's NOT THIER JOB - representing thier constituancy is.

I know if I go to a concert to hear a band that I like, I want to hear them play music and sing. I am not paying for them to shove their political thoughts down my throat.
IF they truely believe in what they said they would have stood their ground, they were trying to kiss ass to the people of that country that are against the war and or Bush. Well their lips got sealed to that ass!
