Seems they have created a device that projects full color streaming video into thin air, and are inter-active ala the movie 'Minority Report'. Something to keep an eye on for gaming as well as a host of other applications.
I have not read the boards yet, but if someone posted this already I will edit or something.

I'd kill people for the computer system used in Minority Report.

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

I remember those having the display hidden in the arcade game and a mirror would pick up the image and reflect it back to make it look like it was 3D and in thin air.
That was very similar to the Haunted House at Disneyland. When you ride your little cart around the mirrors it looks like there is a ghost sitting in your cart...but really it is just a reflection off the mirror that gives that illusion.

I think the first ones will fail but over time, the technology will improve. I think air is an awsome medium, it will just take fine tuning and a lot of R & D, but I could see it being awsome. VR goggles sucked for me because it just seemed too close, and faky, I dunno maybe the ones I played with sucked, but it just didnt seem real. With air, it would be hard not to seem real.
Very cool stuff. The specs look impressive on their home page. My only concern would be if it can be a completely solid image and provide a good high definition picture for home entertainment.
If so, and it falls under $4 or 5K for a 40+ inch screen then I'll be buying it.
Protoypes are 22K atm so we have awhile to wait : )

Yeah I knew the ghosts at disneyland were projected from mirrors onto the plexiglass etc...I went there last year with an angelina jolie type and her 5 yr old daughter.
But I only saw that 3D game once and it was like when I was 16 or something like that, I was more interested in the game then I was in how it worked...

I also agree with Winnow, I'm afraid that it will be too translucent. I mean how hard will it be to read text etc?
22k is definately too much. I think 4k would be fairly questionable....because I think it will have limited usefulness...I'd have to see how high the quality of the display is first hand obviously.

Huh? where'd that come from?Pilsburry wrote:...I went there last year with an angelina jolie type and her 5 yr old daughter.
Yesterday I was eating at McDonalds with a penthouse model type. The fries were kind of greasy. I put a little more salt on them and managed to down them all by dipping them in the nasty ketchup that squirts out of the huge bucket.
Tell me...what part of my story seems out of place and has nothing to do with the rest of it?
They wouldnt even need to drop in price really... the consumer video market has proven that it can thrive with ultra high price displays. I sell 10-15 Plasma displays per month ranging in price from 4k to 25k and my company installs over 100 a month. However the real challange will be creating an extremely high res image from this display, and how well it can handle full motion video.
This 2cp has been brought to you by DOKURANGER!

That and how accurate the touch controls really are.
Because if the touch controls work well but the display is not quite as clear as you want, you might get it anyway, but if the image quality is not that high and the touch controls are crap, then it's not worth the cash.
I'd love to have something like this, but to me...4k is a lot of money but I might do it a few years from now. 25k though...eh...it's a it much for a TV or monitor. I always think about what else I could have bought with the money if I bought a rear projection TV 60" for like $2,500.
I'll let the truly rich people pay for the R&D. Besides it might be a while before most programs or shows etc can be played on one....like HDTV...or it might not catch on at all like lazerdisc or DAT.

I agreed Ransure and this is a private company so they can do whatever they want without answering to stockholders.Ransure wrote:They wouldnt even need to drop in price really... the consumer video market has proven that it can thrive with ultra high price displays. Generally, if it was possible to maufacture these much cheaper, I'd hit up the early adopters for big time bucks and then, if the cost to manufacture allowed it, I'd price the 40 inch versions in the $3-4K area and sell a ton of them while continuing to develope better models...introducing them at a high markup again for the state of the art peeps.
If this is a decent solution for HDTV viewing then this company can make an unbelievable amount of money by hitting the upper fringes of the middle of the road home theater buyers.
This product has huge potential commercially though in Airports, stores, hell...the applications are limitless.
I hope it's for real as another company, Microvision, has been trying to market their Virtual Retina Displays and still haven't managed to mass produce them. (VRD scans an image directly onto your retina thus no need for a screen at all. Basically you look into the direction of a beam of light and will see a full screen image (similar to a heads up display) The potential for VRDs is limitless as well but a big time use for it would be to use in on cell phone sized electronic devices with the ability to see a full color 19' 1280X1024 screen for viewing information as an example.
I just thought of another use for this technology. Privacy shields. In work or public areas, virtual walls could be placed for privacy at restaurants, virtual menus that are interactive could pop up at tables, make your selection then *poof*....I'm thinking of some cool shit that you could do with this technology. In open areas where permanent walls arent desired, if cheap enough, this technology would rock...as it's two sided...a business/restaurant could have the inside of the screen display ambient environments while the outside displayed advertising for them.
I want a job...nay, I want to buy stock damnit : ) go public you bastards.
