Winnow, for you with Love
Real love, not the fake kind.
Summary: Valve is pissed at NVIDIA because their cards are shit and HL2 looks better on the ATI card than on the NVIDIA!

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
X-Box dumped nVidia and is going with ATI as well for X2.
The problem now is getting enough people to buy nVidia so ATi keeps the prices reasonable on their high end cards. I'm going to stop educating people on why ATI has been the better card for the past 8-12 months and will be in the foreseeable future as it will start hurting my pocketbook.

EQ II is still being developed with NVidea in mind. That was my main reason for walking down that road. I've believed the hype about the driver issues with ATI. Word of mouth is a scary thing.
I respect Winnow's opinion on these cards so I'm thankful that I'm not buying my new top-o-da-line card until at least December.
I look forward to more of these types of threads to help formulate my opinion on what card to buy. I'm sure the fallout from this report will be clear by then. Either way, I'm sure either card won't 'suck' .. just one will be 'better'

Sony developed Planetside with Nvidia as well and you should see how bad they fucked THAT up. Meanwhile, my Radeon had me up and runnign with no problems throughout the beta and into release. I think they finally found all of the Nvidia bugs about a month after release.
I will stick with Radeon until proven otherwise.

I've got an 64Mb 8500 that I bought not too long after they came out, the initial drivers were miserable and didn't improve for almost a year. It's still fairly disapointing compared to the wifes Geo 2 Ti. They might be better cards technically, but in application I'm not that impressed.
I'm shopping for video cards now, the most bang for the buck looks like a 256Mb FX5600 atm.

I'm an ATI fanboi and i thank Microsoft for going with ATI for their X2 consle...
I got laid less when i used a Pentium. I talk about my AMD and how it has 8 data channels instead of 6 and why AMD's QuantiSpeed Architecture easily out-performs Intel's Hyperthreading technology. Suffice to say that it gets the chicks all hot and flustered...

The performance numbers on the 5600 are nearly identical to the Ti 4600. I haven't looked at pricing, but if you simply won't go with the ATI, you might wanna check out the 4600.Aabidano wrote:I've got an 64Mb 8500 that I bought not too long after they came out, the initial drivers were miserable and didn't improve for almost a year. I had 2 TI-4600's...one already burnt out...
So if I 2-box in EQ2, I'll need another card..and if I do I'll probably get an ATI..just because I can. But I'll be waiting until like March to even decide if I need a 2nd card...I got my old GeForce 2 in now hehe...I don't play 2 games at once anymore so one high end card is fine for now.

In the small sampling of games I've tested so far, the 9800 Pro blows the 5900FX Ultra's doors off by a wide margin.
It's very rare when running reasonably fast gear that you can put a piece of hardware into your system and see a VERY noticable improvement, but that's what's happened here.
I'm such a whore for technology.

Aranuil, count your blessings that Teh fnord modded you. Otherwise, you'd be the Silicon Whore!

for the longest time Nvidia blew ati out of the water in both hardware and driver support.
Interesting to see how the tables have turned.
However one thing I have noticed the tables tend to turn over and over and over again.
I have seen the top end cards from both arenas and well you cannot tell the difference. The human eye can only distinguish to a certain point.
But I suppose right now ATI has the edge. Right now that is.
