Death of a HRTBRKR

Post by Kylere »

Last night at approx 830pm about 10 miles south of exit 67 on US23 in Michigan I lost power steering, brakes, etc while doing 70MPH in my 1996 Mustang GT Convertible all at once, as a rainstorm was going on, this was the edge that took me over and after spinning several times I ended up in a guardrail.

I am fine, thanks to 8 cylinders of American Steel, but my baby is toasty, they have not pronounced her dead yet, but it may still happen.

Car number 17 off the line that year, and it may never drive again. I mourn her and share my pain with my online associates and friends as shared joy is multiplied and shared pain divided.

Moonlight Metallic Blue, White leather interior and an ability to hug the road like a lover at 150MPH and I already miss her.

I might be upset if you had a '67 Shelby GT or something - but a '96? Pfft! =) Glad to hear you are okay, though!

You probably wouldn't have lived had you been smoking a cigarette. You would have taken the time of pulling your hand off the wheel and removing your cigarette, lowering your steering ability.

Dropping the habit has already saved your life once good sir.

You are ok though! Thank god for that!

Lesson: Don't buy a Ford again. In fact, stay away from GM too. American car makers still don't "get it".

Your next car should be a Subaru WRX.

Thanks All

Can you believe that 2 days later the shop is still finding things to fix? Insurance adjuster is about to declare it totalled if they find 1k more damage. Sigh.

Yes my plate does read HRTBRKR, but it is the car not me. Slowmaro's and their heartbeat of America trash inspired it.

As for foreign cars versus American Cars, you show me a foreign car for 32k or less that will outrun mine, and I will buy it, or should I say will outrun mine pre accident. Now add in the fact that I am 6'3 and need to fit in said car. Now add in the fact that a 2.0 liter turbo with the same HP specs as mine base is NOT going to be as fast, because of a wonderthing called Torque.

Yep for the money, the Mustang is the better choice.

Ouch, so like just after we ate dinner?

I should have loaned you my car like you asked heh....the belt would have broken probably going 40mph on dry road on the way to the gym heh....of course then I would be responsible for it ;-( But I probably wouldn't have done as much damage if any.

I'm going to take this as a hint and when I get my car back today, I'm going to check my belt for cracks because it's an older car with an original belt. (My car is still at a bar from last night)

you actually use that as a criteria to buy a car?

perhaps you should reevaluate your criteria. it will prevent you from buying another Ford, which will ultimately be better for you.

While a Mustang is very nice on a straight, well paved road, a fucking Civic will outpace it on a twisty road. Live axles are the suck.

Have to agree. 4 door Civic EX here. 18k of driving goodness. Sure, I don't break the sound barrier, but the amount of money I need to put into the car to keep it running amounts to jack and shit. It's not too shabby looking a car either.

I'm not going to rice out my civic (it's a '98 and I'm 34...and not white trash), but it makes a nice car for driving and comfort. Trunk size is probably the only real drawback

Actually, Ford has outpaced such wonderful manufacturers as Volkswagen and BMW according to new reliability tests. You'd certainly be better off with a Japanese car in that sense, but American cars are not as unreliable as reputed.

Audi/Volvo are still some of the best rated vehicles for safety. The tests my company has had run, and has received from outside sources proves some amazing things about them. Sure makes me wonder what the hell the engineers there are using in their vehicles.

As to the original subject, it always sucks to lose a car that's your "baby" no matter what it is.

Deal, Foreign car Nissan Skyline 93 r32.. at a nifty 19 grand it will outrun most Americans stock. Throw in a few bolt ons and you can beat a good amount of american cars..

Mainly 19 grande due to importing over from japan, and getting all the legalizations for it to be street drivin in the USA.

For around 50k you can buy a Corvette that hits 1g on the skid pad has a sub 5 sec 0-60 time and top end of over 170. You can't buy another car with that performance brand new for that price. The Dodge Viper SRT-10 is probably the closest your gonna get in price for roughly the same performance for 30k more.

Think of it as an excuse to get a decent car. Mustangs just aren't what they used to be and there is no way I would buy one that wasn't at least 1972(I think that was last decent year) or older.

I don't think I really like that all that much. =\

No newly designed Mustang will ever top the classic ones.. I don't know why they keep trying.

I'm more about efficency, cost, comfort, and style then top end performance.

As for american workmanship. My 1996 GM Pontiac Sunfire is running smooth, with just some maintenance and some oxygen sensors.

There were some minor issues with it, like the windshield wipers flaked the paint off, twice....likely because they guys didn't wear gloves when handling it pre-paint. But oh well....it's 7 yrs old, was like 11k new when I got it, I run it hard (not many miles but I slam the pedals all around and even take it off road like a jack-ass).

There was one more problem but I think it was my fault and it was covered by warranty. A week after I bought it (or less) I drove it at a sustained 110+ MPH (I think I hit 120-125 but my speedometer only went to 115) for a couple hours...pretty much the entire width of pennsyvania and pretty fast through all of ohio and such as well....it didn't die right then, but I could feel it slipping some (it was a manual). Anyway they replaced that clutch pedal rod thing a few months later and then put a regulator on my car so it stops at 105 MPH now, so I won't have that issue in the future heh.

It gets great gas mileage, runs fine, was cheap as hell, handles nice, comfortable......I can keep up with almost anyone, because there are always other cars you get stuck behind and turns.

I wouldn't be looking at new cars if it wasn't for the fact it's 7 years old. And even with that being said, I'm thinking I'll keep it another 1-2 years longer...can't really depreicate too much... I have no car payments and my insurance is $750/YEAR for full coverage.

Corvette...pfft.....I wouldn't be caught dead in that POS. Corvette has about as much appeal as a Ford Mustang. I don't care if the Corvette might be faster, I'll stick with my M3!

You know Zoocow for once you have hit it on the head, they need to upgrade the structure, and release the 64 and a half as the 2005 Mustang.

Change in safety glass, add some door struts, airbags, and a modern engine.

Screw the modern engine. Just drop in the old 289 HiPO with that body style and enjoy! The only problems I ever had with Mustangs was with their distribution of weight. They were horrid in wet weather or snow. If they did put out a retro Mustang with a 64 or 65 body, I would probably get one in a heartbeat.

I just realized where you were saying your accident was, and if what I have heard is true, that is the deadliest stretch of highway in Michigan. Something like from just North of Ann Arbor all the way to M59 there are more accidents per car that travels through than anywhere else. It's a good thing you're okay, and don't listen to anyone who talks shit about a Ford. They are obviously not from around here. =P

It's just a pity that Nissan threw all that extra weight on the new Z and wound up with a car that competes in price with a Corvette and in performance with a Mustang instead of a car that could have competed in performance with a Corvete and price with a Mustang. I guess their focus groups told them there wasn't enough demand for a stripped down sports car a la the original Z platform...

The 280Z was not really stripped-down. The original 240 was, and it kicked ass. Then came the 260...a little heavier, and a few more goodies. The along came the 280 which wasn't real sure if it was a sports car or a luxury car....and it sucked. Seems Nissan still hasn't learned.
