Howling Stones Wing Check!

Post by Aslanna »

While looking for some XP one day we decided to go to HS. After a bit of discussion it turned out one group was claiming the entire South Wing in addition to the halls between South and East. Total mob population of that camp: roughly 70 mobs. Said group was not AEing, by the way.

I'm just curious as to what others thought in regards to what constitutes South Wing.

A common Practice in HS is to take a Wing, Now the problem I see with that is in order to get to another Wing you need a key from said Wing which can end your Day in HS soon unless you have a rouge.

I don't go without a rogue.

South wing pretty much goes from dropoff to the zoneout as far as I've ever seen. It could continue on through the fake wall if you were killing fast enough, but usually by the time you've cleared the room right before the zoneout you can run back to the start and catch repops.

More than one group in a wing would be stupid.

Usually by wing or if multiple groups are going wing to wing without the aid of a rogue, it kinda works like golf.

Howling Stones is one of the best designed zones in EQ. I still don't get why Verant didn't use the idea for some zones in Velious and Luclin.

The zone can handle 5-6 groups w/out a train in sight.

South Wing has plenty of mobs to keep a single group busy. SW group doesn't need to pull the mobs in the hall between South and East Wings as well.

1 group - North Wing
1 group - West Wing
1 group - South Wing
1 group - South/East Hall
1 group - East Wing
1 group - Zone-in/Basement

Works well. I don't mean entire groups necessarily. A shaman, necro or even whiney druid can solo the zone in and a duo can handle most of the wings depending on level/aa's.

Technically there are 6 camps in Howling Stones. One of the 4 wings, the zone in and the basement. You could fit more groups per wing but you would start stepping on each others toes way too quickly. That said, most people honor that if you are in North wing, the whole damn things yours.

That aside, I see the true relevance to your question. If you pass into the secret wall to the East wing and go all the way to the East wing, You technically cant get back to the south without zoning back to the center and starting it all over again! So where does the Southwing camp stop? Instead of argueing that, I think I'll bring up the fact that the South wing is the largest one of them all.. If I were in the wing and another group wanted the mobs from the locked door room ( One with the cookie-port back to zone in and the fake wall to the East room ) I wouldnt mind it. THe amount of mobs between that locked door and the 2 areas would probably be enough to keep both groups busy. The ironicaly stupid part of this however is the fact that in about 90% of the time I have spent time in HS, there were a max of 18 people there and usually no more than 14 ( hehe 2 groups in different wings and 2 people duoing the zone in ). So in most cases, tell the other groups to get their own damn wing!

"Technically" there are no camps anywhere in the entire game. Stop making the guide's jobs harder.

If you ask me, 1 group could probably camp the whole zone with an AE group. Paladins pulling in there are insane, bust the DA to get those HT's off of you, and it's really easy to cheat the pathing so you can out run most if not all of the mobs. Also, something interesting I found out, skeletons agro independantly, not group. So, basically, you can pull like 50 and none will sit around...

Also, the named that can pop in the halls between South and East is on the East named cycle. So I use that as supporting evidence that the halls are not part of South Wing camp!

Anyway, what we did was do a camp check. Someone responded South and someone else East. I said fine, moving to halls between South and East and heard no complaints. So we moved past the South people and through the zone out room and through the fake wall and started bonking critters. I soon got engaged in tells with the apparent leader of the South group. I tried explaining that they were trying to claim 70 mobs for a single group but that didn't appear to go over well. So eventually I just said go ahead and petition and we'll let a gm sort it out since I had no doubt a gm would laugh at any (non-ae) group trying to claim 70 mobs.

Oh, when we went through South half the mobs were still up so it's obvious they were just farming named and didn't care that much for the xp which is the opposite of why we were there. I would have had no problem giving them the loot had the named actually spawned and dropped something. I don't have a problem respecting people camps but they need to be at least a little realistic in what they are trying to claim.
