A Gay High School - Locked Due to Bug - please make new one!

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City is creating the nation's first public high school for gays, bisexuals and transgender students.

The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

"I think everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. "It lets them get an education without having to worry."

The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.

The new school's principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.

"Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong," Long said. "There's no reason these children should be treated separately."

The Hetrick-Martin Institute's Web site says the school will give its students "an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community."

I think it's a pretty stupid idea...

It's pretty hard on gay kids in HS. My sister is bi (at least for right now) and all her friends are gay. The HS I loved was a really difficult place for them. However I would think that this might even be worse. HS is such a time of impression it might be beneficial to have a relaxed environment. However the publicity and ridicule that will come from those with extreme prejeduce will more than likely outweigh any benefits... IMHO. It also goes against the whole mainstream idea. Just like smokers or any other nondesireable group for the general population, if we put them out of sight we don't have to think about them. At least it seems like the underlying idea to me... just because it seems way to prevelant in our socitey. As I haven't lived through it though I can't say for sure.

I dunno - it would seem parades, bumper stickers, flamboyancy (whether it's femenine guys or butch females) and such seem to make public notice already? I know not all gays are public about it, but getting special treatment is about as wrong to me as any non-native american in the United States getting special treatment for not being caucasian.

This is stupid. I am sorry that they had a tough time in regular schools but I am straight and I had a lot of problems in school too. Should I have gotten a school for really short white guys? The only way tolerance is going to be learned is to keep everyone together and for the teachers and parents to raise their kids right. Worst part is that part of this school is coming out of the tax payers pocket. The city is paying $3.2 million to revamp a building for 100 students. Ridiculous!!

Completely remove the fact that this facilitates segregation and you're left with a fiscal mess.

Well, it's not like a ghetto, because they aren't being forced to move there, and unable to EVER leave. Moreover, they are highly unlikey to be liquidated at a later date, and the survivors put into boxcars, and shipped east!
This looks to me like a huge hate crime magnet...but if one was actually inclined to commit a hate crime, he would pick somewhere else, for anyone who does anything against this school., or it's students & facuity, will likely get caught, and have his/her ass nailed to the wall! Who would be that STUPID?? Oh wait, probably lots of ppl....nm.

It'll actually be HARDER to catch the perps than it is at integrated schools. The gays who get their asses kicked leaving this school won't be able to recognize and ID their assailants because they don't go to school with them. Unless they have the NYPD make a special task force to escort all the fags home (goodbye even more tax $$), I expect a LOT of violence against these students.
