Woman Banned From Bookstore For Bush Joke

POSTED: 6:39 a.m. EDT July 25, 2003

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Singer-songwriter Julia Rose doesn't like President George W. Bush's legs
She's been banned from a Borders Books and Music store in Virginia for commenting on the president's physique. Rose was performing at the Fredericksburg Borders, when she told the crowd the president has, "chicken legs."

She said he needs to pump some iron. The line drew a laugh, but not from Borders' management. She's been banned from that store, but not others in the chain.

Rose says she's mystified by the reaction. She tells the Free Lance-Star newspaper she was just poking fun at the president's frame and wasn't making a political comment.
Chicken legs? Wow. Talk about some serious mudslinging there. I think she got off easy.

No I'm saying he CAN help it. As she suggest he can work out. If he dosen't want to then he should have to listen if people call him chicken legs.

How fucking gay! I swear parts of this country are like a different planet, and not just a different state.
How fucking sensitive can you be if a statement like that gets you banned from a store. In fact, I think its too lame. There MUST be more to the story.

I agree Skogen but just as that person has the right to say what she wants, the owner of the store has the right to kick her out.

Waaaaait a minute!! BORDERS Books? Then it probably wasn't the owner, it was the manager. I don't think the manager can kick someone out for JUST that. The manager has corporate rules and guidline to adhere to. I'm not sure if he has the same freedom of choice that a businees owner enjoys.

Im sure the manager can but he might feel the wraith of the corporate office.

It's still a private business and most businesses reserve the right to refuse service to anyone they want.

It's kind of like an online business I ordered a usb 2.0 card from a couple of weeks ago. They screwed the order up, didn't ship, didn't ship, didn't ship and wouldn't respond to my inquiries. I went online and gave them a bad rating (it was a yahoo store). Almost immediately after that they cancelled my order and issued a credit to my cc. They decided they didn't want to do business with me since I gave them an awful rating. It was their perogative to do so.

There's no doubt the manager had the right to ban her from a legal stand point, but I wonder if the manager had the right from a corporate policy stand point. Corporations put policies in place to 1) protect managers and staff from getting into legal troubles, and 2) to limit a manager or employee making a decision that could potentially alienate a bunch of potential customers. Considering that the managers decision has resulted in negative publicity for the company he/she will probably get a reprimand.
