Jessica Lynch.. again

Post by Kelshara »

Ok so I am confused. A woman's truck gets fired on and she gets injured. Never fires a shot, gets medical treatment and then a staged rescue. And then what? She gets a parade and a Bronze Star?!?

Quote from CNN.com:
The Bronze Star is given for meritorious service in combat and the Purple Heart is given to service members wounded in action.
Wtf?

What you have to remember is that the masses of sheep that populate this great country of America believe the pap force-fed by the press. They genuinely believe that Jessica Lynch's rescue was dramatic, dangerous and very patriotic.

Medal ceremonies improve morale, generate good press and otherwise give the public something to talk about. While she does deserve the purple heart and quite possibly the PoW medal, the bronze star is questionable.

*shrug*

Just my two cents.

You guys would not beleive how hectic it is down here rightnow. In all seriousness, the parade grounds and everything where she's going to be making her speach are allready under watch by snipers - yesterday! - and if there were a good two dozen national news trucks here.

The term media circus describes this well.

She has no recollection of the events so I think they probably told her she singlehandedly killed 300 republican guard using her nail file and now need to decorate her to maintain the charade ;)

I wonder if she is as confused as to why she is getting soooooo much attention as some of us here. Not that I am belittling what she went through, but I don't think she is a war hero.
I cannot remember, but did any of the guys who came back from that fuck-up in Somalia get this when they got here?

Bronze Star? Been given for less, although still dubious in this case unless everybody who survived in her unit also gets one or better.

Yeah, nice comeback.
Although I don't think she deserves a bronze star, she definitely doesn't deserve someone sitting behind his computer saying belittling commets about her being a woman & trivializing what she went through.

Ummm get your facts straight, 9 people died on the mission that she was CAPTURED, no shots were fired except at doors to break them down, tho the keys were offered, shooting the doors seemed more fun.

Fuck....why stop at the Bronze Star? I'm sure a CMoH will be even better publicity. Just need some more hard core spin doctoring to justify how being captured and rescued equates to such a grandiose act of heroism.

maybe her friends and family are just happy she's coming home.

somebody doesnt have to be a hero for everybody, especially in a small town, to be very glad she is home.

i don't think her story is a big news item per se, but i am genuinely interested to see her speak at the event today. its a somewhat busy news day so the parade won't get as much hype as it would have otherwise.

if you think the media is driving the hype, who gave her the Bronze Star? Who staged the rescue and fed the dramatic rescue pictures to the press? the press may be on board the bus, but the Pentagon is driving it.

edit: hehe, turned out to be not much of a media spectacle.

Thats the interesting part about this whole thing to me: that regardless of how sucessful the military action was (and there is no denying the "Coalition of the Willing" came, saw and kicked some ass) someone appears desperate to throw some positive spin on this. In Jessica Lynch's case, they appear to be manufacturing a hero.

Cart, I didn't see anyone attacking Lynch, unless questioning the Bronze Star qualifies. No one questions that she was following orders like a good private, until someone fucked up and her unit ended up in the wrong place. But is following your unit into a situation that you get too fucked up to do anything about, grounds for a combat medal? Purple Heart without a doubt: she was wounded in combat. Bronze Star: for what?

As a member of the military myself, I think the bronze star was undeserved. Especially since she can't remember anything she did to earn it. My guess is that the military gave her the star to remind her of her amnesia about the incident. I am glad she is alive and home though as well as every other troop that makes it out as well.

Sorry I guess I should have said "bare hands" instead of "nail file" would that have been ok?
Anyway lets break it down for the hard of thinking:
"She has no recollection of the events" = plain truth
"so I think they probably told her" = a reference to the evil pentagon
the rest of the sentence is some bullshit i made up as, you know, a joke about what the pentagon told her.

Donno why I'm bothering trying to explain this to you fucks though. It's hard enough getting you to understand the basic meaning of the words let alone the "hidden meaning".

Still struggling with basic english huh? And no I don't mean the typical spelling error either.

Listen Forrest, I know you were waiting for the slimmest of openings to come here and call me an asshole whether you understand a word I say or not but even for you you're stretching here. So in future don't wait for me to post. Save yourself the effort of wrapping your tiny mind around my words and just post "Tanc is an asshole" every day and knock yourself out. I can take it ;)

You forgot a period after the word "asshole". As a result of said mistake, you forgot to capitalize the word "Whether" because it should be the beginning of a new sentence. Moreover, you should put a comma after the word "you" that comes before "you're". :D :D :D

Lol. Yeah sure. How many lives have you saved lately? Yeah I thought so. Why don't you go do the gene pool a favor and get a vasectomy? Last time I checked, Iraqis didn't exactly look like they wanted to be "rescued" from the good ol US of A.

Why would anyone begrudge this woman a medal and a homecoming celebration? Lot's of things could have been worse for her, but she didn't exactly have a stroll in the park either. For Jessica and her family this is a happy thing, why not shrug and move on if you don't agree?

It's not Jessica Lynch ANYONE here has a problem with.

Not Tanc, not Kelgar, not me, not anyone.

The problem we have is with our beloved political/military leaders who have awarded the Bronze Star *cough*
3. Criteria: a. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the military of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

b. Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances described above, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star.

c. Awards may be made to recognize single acts of merit or meritorious service. The required achievement or service while of lesser degree than that required for the award of the Legion of Merit must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction.
To someone who was captured, imprisoned, and rescued.

Purlple Heart? Definitely.

P.O.W. medal? Of course.

Bronze Star? I fail to see how she meets the above criteria. The only criteria she seems to meet is that she was serving in the capacity of the armed forces. I don't see that any of her actions were heroic or meritorious. Typically heroism involves putting yourself at risk for the good of others, and I fail to see where she did anything more than any of the other soldiers, sailors, or marines that were sent to Iraq.

Once again, this has fuck all to do with Lynch herself. I'm sure she didn't say, "Hey! I think I deserve the bronze star for this!"

I personally don't have any problem with her getting a Purple Heart and PoW medal as she qualifys for it and a homecomming celebration is a nice gesture espcially after what they went through in Iraq.

However I would be disapointed if she is awarded a bronze star. The reason for this is I think that in some ways it has become much too commonplace for people to be awarded medals just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In addition if you look back on previous wars like WW1 and WW2 medals were very important and they were awarded to people who had really gone above and beyond what most people would do in their given situation. I don't see getting lost and than captured by the enemy and having to stay in a hospital due to wounds suffered deserving of a bronze star mainly based on criteria established for the award of bronze/silver stars and other medals in previous conflicts around the world.

However this is just my opinion and it is not important enough to me to go to any great lengths to try and prevent it happening.

I would love to see the write up on the recommendation form.

and the various recommendations, remember, she has to be recommended by a supervisor, and that also has to pass through an superior officers review, as well as an additional write up. Then, I think (I can't remember) it has at least one if not two more review / additional recommendation passes by progressively higher officers / chain of command before it gets approved.

I would love to see what the various people said about her to justify the medal. The write up will determine whether she gets is. If they recommending officials did a crappy job, it would have been denied. If they made her seem like she could walk on water, and invented sliced bread, then... well, you get the picture.
