Poll: Should I Play EQ again?

Post by noel »

My play time would be extremely limited, but I'm contemplating playing EQ again from time to time. I'd probably not start over, and just play with my 60 Warrior that probably has crappy gear by today's standards.

Let me know what you think.

Peace.

I thought about this myself, but with 1 hour max/day of playtime available, what good would I be to a guild like foh. "hi guys, what's going on? Ok, logging!"

It is a very tough choice to make. I was in the same boat a month ago that you are in now. I adopted an account that had a high level warrior on it. My old guild had a shake up and needed some folks so I came back to help out. They decked me out with gear I have no clue wtf it is or where it came from. So now I am just a decked out warrior who doesn't do all that much. My play time is limited between Family, Work, and I am taking classes 3 days a week. I have been on maybe 3 times in the last month. I feel somewhat guilty because I am wearing all this great gear and not participating. Oh well. If you come back make sure that those who helped out know that you will be very limited time and not to expect much from you.

I miss folks but so far I haven't had the itch to come back.

There comes a time in the game where the whole concept gets old.

At its base, its all about figuring out how to kill a target and equipping the spoils.

Everything done in the game supports those base motivations.

After a while you start wanting more in a game.

I'm sure the next round of games will provide this variety, I say hold out until then.

I honestly don't know what to tell you Bro.

As a former guildmate and one who respected you, and enjoyed the play time with you, I'd say "yes" wholeheartedly. (Gear ain't that hard to fix if we work at it a bit and Rizz is feeling a little outnumbered in the WE warrior...er ranger department :p)

But at the same time you have to do what feels right for you. If you re-activate EQ, what will you be putting on the sideline and are you sure that is a choice you want to make?

I agree with you(adex). When the game first came out I was chubbin big time because it was the coolest thing I have ever seen and have been hoping for. I have a long history with AD&D and later Fantasy Hero so this was a big treat for me. I guess it started to lose it's appeal when you finally realize, an epiphany maybe, that it is a viscious and teidious circle of; needing an item so I can level, leveling so I can get this item that will help me level. In and of itself that isn't so bad but when you need 75 people to bring down a mob for a handful of trinkets that you will never get, because there are dozens of people ahead of you, it become frustrating.
I am going to wait for SWG to come out before I get serious about gaming again. The hype from that game just looks too great.

I'm sure you stopped playing for some reason. That reason still likely exists. What will you be giving up to come back?

I play when I have time, I'm not on nearly as much as I used to be. 5-10 hours a week at most usually.

There's only so many hours in a week, and I make a concious effort not to let this game impact real life. It's still (mostly) fun for me, and it's easy to get carried away with it.

I truly appreciate all the responses.

Am I to assume then, that it's just impossible to play EQ casually? I gurantee if it isn't possible, I'll be around for no longer than a month because my training/work schedule won't allow the time necessary to play EQ like I used to.

Still thinking about it. Thanks again.

Dude, I've found that limited playtime has vastly increased my enjoyment of the game.

EDIT: It's absolutely possible to casually play EQ. Don't come back expecting to see VT, or do the UberMOBs that have huge fucking timesinks (Seru etc.) in front of them, but pretty much all the content of the previous expansions is accessible to anyone with a level 60 toon and a clue. Last I remember, you have both ;)

I can tell you that it is possible to find things to do outside raiding non-stop. The new trade skills are fun to play around with and you will spend some time farming the items for them. Go back and try to figure out a quest no one has done yet. Spend time exploring a low-mid level dungeon you never had the chance to see. Grab a group of friends and pay back some mobs that kicked your ass.

Playing only to beat the biggest mobs and getting huge loot upgrades does not need to be your motivation. It is only the motivation for power gamers. I could stop raiding right now and still enjoy myself by doing pick-up groups or stomping lower Guk solo.

depends on what you call "casually"
if you have limited play time it will be hard to plan your life around a raid or something that takes more than 1 hour to complete.

If you just wanna log on chat with friends and kill some mobs while chatting then an hour isn't that short.

If money isn't a problem for you I'd say pay for a month and stop by just to see how the game looks and say hi to people. you can always cancel again

I'd consider myself a semi-casual player. As long as your guild/freinds understand that it shouldn't be a big deal. It limits you a bit, but I find I have a lot more fun when I am on.

It's entirely possible, Aranuil.

I would love to see you back in game. However, you have to set the parameters first. I took a two-week break that I thought was retirement. Came back, and had a rel problem the first week setting limits to insure that I didn't run right back into the problems that caused me to log off in the first place.

Like anything else, it requires discipline and a little planning.

I suppose you pretty much have to think about what YOU want from the game. Sadly the game is built around those high end encounters but like others have said, there is a lot you can do as a casual player if you know what you want. I am starting to get a bit excited by reading these posts about what I could do if I put my mind to it. Exploring the noob zones that you never really checked out before. Hell I have only seen the surface of Mistmoore and some of the others. I think I may actually do that next time I log in. Should be fun.

I say it depends on the person.

I've seen people say they are going to come back casually and then start playing 48 hours a day 13 days a week.

Do you have the willpower to truly play casually after you played so intensely?

Personally, I don't play any game as intensely as I did eq, and I won't allow myself. But personally, I can't stand what verant is doing with this game anymore, and that is my controlling factor to why I won't play.

Either way, good to see you around.

Aranuil hell yes you can play casually. It really depends on couple of factors. First and foremost is that you join a Guild that wouldn't depend on you playing all the time and would respect your playing availability. Second is self control.

If you decide to come back let me know I am sure I can give you a few things to re-equip your warrior. I know we would love to have ya in Primus Exodus if you came back but I would be happy to see ya in any guild and playing again.

People that are always waiting for the next big thing crack me up. A perfect example is electronics. "Next year gizmo X is coming out and it will have a better picture and sound." lol. Next year rolls around..."well gizmo X is cool but next year gizmo Z will have a better picture and sound." Keep waiting people : )

Hint: You're still going to suck even with better graphics and sound so you may as well play now and ruin our fun.

Aranuil, you can play EQ casually. I have been playing for a very long time and I would describe my play style over the past several months as casual. With all the RL things I got going, I don't have a lot of time to play. However, when I can play, I have a blast. Come back and give it a whirl. You can always quit again :)

Not sure I agree with you Winnow. I think what some of the people here are talking about has nothing to do with new hardware but rather new and better content. Coding is coding but content and game flow are, I believe, very important. If you were ripping on me about my eager anticipation for the release of SWG that's fine. SWG seems to have taken all the bad things about EQ in mind when building their world. I think that this game will be the next step or generation that other games will have to aspire to. So yes, I get a bit excited when the new big thing comes out.

It's ok to be excited about a new game. Online games are what you make them though. Stick figures can be fun if you know how to enjoy yourself. Anyone remember all text games?

I look forward to SWG but I'll enjoy what's available today.

Aranuil, wow would be a great day on Veeshan to see you roaming the zones again.
As to casual play, well you have done the hard part already in my mind by hitting level 60. If you don't get blinded by the need to be as ub3r as the next guy you will still have tons of fun in EQ.

Personal example.
Due to family (3 kids, a wife, dog, and a good amount of friends) my time is very valuable not only to myself but to others. So to keep a balance I have set specific play times

Tuesday nite 5 pm to 2 am (my game nite)
Friday nite 10 pm to 2 am (after the family has gone to bed)
Saturday nite (repeat of Friday nite)

Notable exceptions
I have an understanding with the officers and warmasters in Primus that if they absolutely need Atokal for something that they call me when they are about to pull the big mob, I log in get a ride to the event, CoTH to area if possible.
Kill mob gate out and log. This doesnt happen all that often.

Works for me having a blast keeling stuff and it is a good stress reliever.

Cheers hope to see you around soon bro.

I understand where you are coming from Winnow. The thing is, many of us left the game for reasons other than the game itself. In my case, dealing with family, making a family  , work, classes, any number of other things have more priority.

Unless you already have a char in the upper levels it is unlikely you would make it up there as a casual player. I mean think about it, how long does it take for a die hard gamer to make it from 54 to 55. That may not seem like a long time for the steady gamer but for a casual player that may as well be a lifetime.

Think on this as well. What guild is going to want to spend time and resources on a player who can only play 3-5 times a month? Granted that friends will donate left over gear as well others but when it comes to raids you really can't realisticly expect to win any gear unless everyone else already has that item. I am not saying that is the end all be all of the game. I know that people can have fun just going along on the raid. I know I do.

Now back to what was said, and I agree with you, you can have fun playing the game if you know how to enjoy yourself.

As a general rule I advise against returning to EQ. But that's just me; I was the all-or-nothing type. If you can handle casual and occasional play, then you might as well have a little fun with the game. It's up to you.

Good to see you post bro..

The game has a long reach and I know many who have tried to quit and then come back. Often they come back in better control and with a focus as to why they want to play and their expectations of the game more clearly defined.

There are a lot of "casual" players that only play a couple days a week and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Goodluck and hope to see you around Norrath.. :)

Totally selfishly, I'd love to see you back - I miss chatting with you, and you're not exactly the most communicative person on MSN...

I also think I know you well enough to say that unless you play a game to be the best, you won't really enjoy it ...

So, if it's to log in and chat with people you miss, go for it. If it's for the gaming aspect? Well, I think you'd have a hard time limiting your playtime or getting enjoyment out of the short sessions.
