I need help/advice

I have never did any web site design nor am I excited to learn html and all that. But...
I have a company website/store that needs editing from time to time. The store part is on Yahoo so it's easy to add/delete/edit
The home page needs to have some sort of news put up about once a month. The guy who was taking care of that is busy or unwilling to do it anymore plus I really don't wanna pay him for deleting one text and puting in another if I can only help it. Aka do it myself. Why? Because it sounds simple and I feel it's ridiculous to pay 75 bucks for a cut/paste job taking 1 minute or less.

Here's my question. Is there anything in Windows or downloadable from the web that will let me edit a simple home page? If I have to I'll buy some software, but it needs to be easy so my clueless self can use it without going back to school

Easily Ennia. It sounds like your site is pretty basic. And it's definately not worth 75.00 for the one minute edit job.

The software I've used cost money depending on your morals : ) If someone doesn't come up with a nice free editor on this thread, I'll suggest a few that are easy to use. After you do it once, you'll be happy to see how easy it is and spend that 75.00 elsewhere.

If the page is already up and is literally just replacing existing text with new text, you can do that yourself in notepad - however if your looking for something that allows dynamic content I can point you in the direction of several 'news' scripts that are available for free.

it's literally replacing old text with new one, we got a picture there too but I don't wanna screw up something so I'm never gonna touch it.

right now I got there info dated back in March and it's really gotta go, especially that I have some specials for the summer that I want the potential customers to notice at hello.

I'll see that thingie Xou, thanks. Also notepad is simple but how do I save it on the server? the site is hosted on hostrocket.com and I can't find anything in their tools to edit content.

To get the file from your computer to the server you have to upload it with and FTP client usually. I *think* HTML Kit has one built in where you can define the server information and then you can save it automatically to the server, but I don't remember for sure.

Alternatively, you can just download WS_FTP or CuteFTP from their websites. Both are excellent FTP clients.

Learning basic HTML is a one-day project btw, it's not as intimidating as you think.

HTML is just a simple, static language that serves as framework for bigger things. If you approach it without being intimidated then it's really pretty simple.

Usually a web host will have tools to upload or download files...

You have to DL the file (unless it's already on your hard drive from your last edit), edit it, and then upload it back to the server, some programs will do that for you automatically....like Frontpage from MSOffice XP Gold or whatever.

It's usually fairly simple to edit in notepad if the page is simple. Or you can find a program to use...I used to use Frontpage Express... I did do a search on the net quickly and the old version I used looks available at http://www.123ecommerce.com/tutorials/f ... xpress.htm but it might not work without IE 5.01....

I usually use the real frontpage now, hell if you have office you might even have it on your disk....I'd check. There are several versions of Office, usually they all have word, excel, outlook, and power point...then there are versions that include Access (Database), Frontpage (web authoring), and PhotoDraw (picture editing).....I assume you have office, I just don't know which package of office you have

For uploading content you need to find out what your FTP information is.

If your web site is say "myweb.com" then the best guess is ftp://ftp.myweb.com

but that's not guaranteed....once you have that then if you know the log-in and password you can go there even in internet explorer to transfer files. Just after it says you don't have permission you can go to "log-in as" with a right click on the page to enter the log-in information...you can't move files but you can copy it to a local folder on your HD or drag and drop new stuff into the window, even create new folders...without an additonal program.

You can even usually change your link to:

ftp://name:pass@ftp.myweb.com or something like that, I'd have to double check the syntax, but you can put the log-in and password in a link usually for FTP's.

But it's probably easier to get an FTP client like LeechFTP or CuteFTP or just go through your hosts interface to upload.

I just found having a link on my favorites list in IE was the easiest method for me since I do it all from home.
