Yeah give her a break Mort, don't be stupid. As much as what she did is wrong and shocking (and yes I'm a mother) she's got enough punishment, she really doesn't need to be abused.
You don't believe that people can be distressed or simply ill to the point that they can snap and do something they will regret forever?
Do you think people can regret, change and try to make a life with whatever they have left?

Damn straight. I am a parent too and this absolutely horrified me. I'm happy that she got life instead of a death sentence. I think she should be haunted and tormented every day of her life.Earliest Release Date: n/a

I am 31 years old. My birthday is September 26. I am looking to meet new people and, hopefully, become friends. During my spare time, I enjoy reading, working puzzles, writing and teaching kids how to swim in a pond. I love rainbows, Mickey Mouse, the beach, the mountains, and waterfalls with kids "playing" underneith. My favorite color is navy blue and my favorite flower is the daisy. I am a Christian and I enjoy attending church. I consider myself to be sensitive, caring, and kind-hearted/cold blooded murderer. I´m currently serving a life sentence on the charge of murder. I have grown and matured a lot since my incarceration, but I will always hurt for the pain I´ve caused so many, especially my children who are sleeping with the fishes. I hope to receive letters from those who are not judgmental and who are sincere. I look forward to hearing from new people and, hopefully, finding new friends. PS. I also like anal!
What a winner she is!

Personally I think that site itself is more of a shame than her being on it. I remember back in the day ( no not last week ) when I would actually check out online sites to meet dates and half were prisoners, but you didn't know until after you started corresponding with them. Some are pretty cool to "talk" to though.
The idea of "dating" a prisoner is just fucking wrong. They are separated from society for a reason. The fact that they are allowed internet access at all is questionable, and I would guess that any mail ( Email or snail mail ) would be "searched" before they actually got it.
I am not saying that I think what she did is right by any means, but the IDEA of the site sickens me.

Studies have shown that if you deny prisoners fundamental human desires like entertainment, cigarettes, junk food, and social interaction with the outside world that they become more violent, more difficult to control, harder to rehabilitate and more expensive to incarcerate than if you didn't.
If you take away everything there is that makes a human being a human being then all they have left is their anger and hatred.
If you really think prisoners get it easy you should check out what a maximum security prison is like.

Yeah you just write to them. You can probably send them pictures and other things if you want to.
I think programs like this are very important to the rehabilitation process for a lot of prisoners. Many inmates don't have anyone to visit them or write to them or any connection to the outside world. Thus, they have to incentive to behave in prison or try to rehabilitate themselves. If they have someone waiting for them on the outside who might want to be their friend it is an incentive for them to try and fit into normal society better.
Statistically speaking a person who has no one to assist them or interact with them on the outside is overwhelmingly likely to re-offend. People who have close family, or a spouse, are more likely not never see the inside of a prison again. Likewise for inmates who get their GED or a college education while in prison, but that isn't really relevant to the thread.
Anyway, if a program like this keeps even one person from committing another felony after leaving prison, then it's money well spent in my opinion. Sure there are a lot of people in prison who are probably unredeemable and will never become a rehabilitated functioning member of society, but many aren't.
There are a lot of people who advocate taking away all prisoner's comforts like TV, internet, smoking, conjugal visits, playing cards, board games and excercise equipment; making them work all day and do nothing at night. All that does is breed more hostility and anger in them and make them worse criminals than they were when they got into prison. They are also more likely to commit more crimes while in prison, extending their sentence and costing more taxpayer money. These people feel that if they make the prison environment as hellish as possible then it will be a deterrant for ex-cons to not commit crimes anymore because they don't want to go back to prison. People's mentality doesn't work like that though.. No one ever thinks they are going to get caught.

Kyoukan,
Wow, we agree on something
heh. Actually I think we agree on some other things as well but it just sounded funny. I agree wholeheartedly with your statments about prisoners except for one thing. I think they should be allowed all of the things you noted in their free time. However I think think, especially for the hard core criminals, they need to put in 8 hours, not 10 or 12 but 8 hours with a lunch break of hard manual labor 5 days a week. They need to work just like everyone else. Plus if you do 8 hours of manual labor a day then you are much more appreciative of the free time to do those other things and often too tired to start a fight... IMHO.

The state wouldn't be paying for this. Just this week the NYC papers had an article about the creep who strangled a 13 year old he met on the internet who was using this site. They pay 60 dollars to have it put up and then are sent the bundled e-mail printouts. Btw cyber-psycho wasnt able to get his replys, the NY prisons dont allow bundled 3rd party mail and the writeaprisoner site took down his page after the publicity.
With Smith's high name recognition, somehow I doubt she will get much beside hate mail for her efforts.

I always imagined that if you make prison THAT unbearable, then criminals would take the better off dead mentality when confronted by the police, and that would cause more police homicides and violence towards police. A criminal would do whatever it took to not go back to the nightmare we would call prison. Just a theory I guess.

A lot of the time it's not possible to make prison more unbearable than what life was like on the street for criminals. Well, I guess it's possible, but then it becomes inhumane and all that entails.
Prison pen-pal circles have been around as long as prisons, newspapers, and the postal service, I doubt they will go away. If lonely people on the outside want to correspond with prisoners that's one thing, but in most cases the prisoner is looking for someone to send money. But hey, if one inmate and one lonely person on the outside hook up and everything is sunshine and roses, what's the harm?

Don't remember where I read it but it seems that there were a lot of complaints. The site stated they would "ask" her to take her ad down. She apparently paid 40 bucks out of her meager prison checking account (wtf, when did prisons become banks?) to place the ad for one year.
I'll try to find and link the article. It also said they wouldn't force her to remove the ad, just ask her to remove it due to all the negative feedback.
