Idea for the upcoming football season

Post by Zamtuk »

I think we should run a 'gambling ring' for football. Except using VV's. We have Las Vegas rules and odds/lines and have people put down as much vv's as they want to gamble. This can work for NCAA and NFL, hell any sport you want, but football is best. :)

Sounds like fun, explain the details please!

Details indeed...

EDIT: will post them later, last night after posting this statement, I spent the next 35 minutes going over all the details only to have them erased by "server difficulties"

Lets try this again...

This is just merely a rough draft so any suggestions are more than welcome. *-indicates some numbers that are compiled off the top of my head, fell free to comment on this. I am also setting this up on a thread like forum unless someone wants to create its own page through VV. (I am the suck at web pages). Also VeeshanVault.org is not responsible for any RL addictions obtained through this idea. How's that for a legal disclaimer!!

First off you have to register into the 'gambling ring'. It will be like Usergroups except you can register in instead of being invite only. Upon doing so you will be awarded 100 vv's* that you are free to do with what you want. You can of course include your own stash of vv's to help you in betting, this is just to get some of the shy posters to play as well. This 'ring' will primarily be done for the NCAA and the NFL. Each week there will be two sticky threads in the forum, one for each category. Of course people are free to make threads based on games they have opinions about, or plan to get some l337 inside infoz. The big winners and losers will be announced each week for laughs. When going to the sticky threads you will see the list of games for the week. To keep it simple only the top 25 teams from NCAA will be gambled on, according to the espn/usa-today poll. Using Vegas odds you will have three options to chose from when betting; over, under, even. I am debating (and you guys will help with this I am sure) if there should be a way to gamble just on if the team wins or not.

You have a deadline each week for each game to place all bets. For each it will be noon by the day of play. (special exceptions will be made for the few Thursday night NFL games) So for MNF you will have to post your bet by noon Sunday. There will need to be two mods preferrably one for each sport. If you (Xou and py) feel like you can do it, then feel free. Other than that I can do the NFL if you want, and I am sure Raistin will want to do the NCAA, but this is if you choose to do so. I don't care. Each mod will post the odds the day they come out which is I believe every Wednesday for NCAA and Thursday for NFL (not sure on the few Thursday games). The odds will be posted in another sticky and from that point on, all bets are open.

Betting vv's will be up to an amount of your choice. Though there is a minimum amount you can bet of 25vv's* per game. There is no limit nor expectation of the amount of games you can bet on. For instance, one week you can bet on the Bengals losing (this should be every week though) and the next week bet on every game. Just like in RL gambling, once your out of vv's you can't gamble, go pharm or beg to get more.

Playoffs will be shamelessly stolen from other ideas as I have no original thoughts on this. We will do the VV NCAA Bowls just like ESPN does the Bowl Pickem'. And we will do the NFL playoffs as brackets with the tiebreaker being the amount of points combined in the Super Bowl. Amount of vv's to be announced or debated on at a later time.

Claiming vv's is the only thing I haven't figured out yet. This is basically for Xou and Pyrella to decide on. Should the dealings of vv's be though a 'bookie' or an automated system? For instance I could be a bookie for the NFL, people place bets with me, and donate the vv's we go from there. I will have close to 20k vv's by the start of the season, also taking in the fact that some people will lose, I could make a great profit. Or can this all be done automatically?

This is the rough rough rough rough draft of my idea, if there is anything that I have forgotten I will post it. I am leaving for vacation either today or tomorrow, so I won't be back until 7/6. Please post any and all comments/suggestions! Thanks. :)

I would definately be interested in this. I could help if we needed to have a different bookie for the different sport. Depends on how many peoples there are I guess.

My guess is a lot of people will get in this. Word will spread around through eq as well and will bring in some people who never post here or much less have registered before. If people want to do the other sports thats cool. I picked football because of the high popularity and low amount of games a season. (16 NFL/~11 NCAA)

Why don't you ask a mod to move this and maybe sticky this in Gen forum for a week or two?

I'd be willing to bet some vv's on either college football (Sooners fan) or NHL games. :D

Even I'm not enough of a Gator fan to bet against the 'Canes in the Orange Bowl. It's gonna be closer than last year, so I might take the under, but it'll take a miracle for us to actually win.

Here's my thoughts on the ring:
1) Zamtuk is a fucking genius
2) Over/Under/Even is cool, but I think you'd be able to draw more people in with the simpler W/L format.
3) Is there a way to allow pool style betting? My friends do a thing where everyone pays 5 bucks, picks the winners/losers (adjusted for point spread) from every top 25 AP teams, and the person who picks the most wins gets the cash every week.

Yes, I would say it's possible. But it would take everyone giving X amount of vv's to a mod or bookie and they would have to keep track of it. Of course it would be posted who gave what. I think I will change it to W/L instead of vegas, BUT the odds should still be posted to give some people useful information. I primarily went with odds because the amount of vv's you could win would be different on every bet you made and had to do with how much you put down. I will think of something to compromise both ideas.

The compromise!

It will be a win/loss format with odds implied. For instance say the Canes play the Gators (had to stir the pot here  ), there will be a box on each side to choose who wins. Beside the boxes will be the odds. So say you put 50 vv's on the Gators who have 10:1 odds you will win 500 vv's. If you put it on the 'Canes who have 3:1 odds you will get 150 vv's.

Sound good?

I am from Columbus Ohio, but grew up a Michigan fan. I now go to school at UNC. :? So I still root for UM but back pocket root for OSU (READ: Especially when they play for the championship). But more than anything I am a Big Ten fan.

Yeah, my loyalty to the Big 10 made me root for OSU in the Nat'l Championship game this year. I don't think I'll ever feel clean again.

I never felt such shame like when I stood up and yelled "GO DAWGS!!!" after UGA scored on the Criminoles in teh Sugar Bowl.

Speaking about conference loyalty, I like to thank the 'Canes for being the biggest whores in the NCAA. No longer will Fatty and his chain gang get to waltz though that prison bitch of a conference on their way to another underseved prime time Bowl. Fucking WTG, guys!

I would be willing to do the NCAA Football one. As long as being the bookie I get a 82% cut off all winning pools!
