The price of a tan - What you should consider this summer
http://www.msnbc.com/news/934682.asp?vt ... 1440&cp1=1
More than 80% of the effects of aging are caused by UV rays. Why pay for a tan with wrinkles and blotches? Or worse, malignant melanoma? I've found that most people who tan are completely misinformed about the damage of UV rays. People who go to tanning salons are the worst because many of these establishments perpetuate myths about tanning beds being safer that the sun and that only sunburns are damaging.
So next time you tan, consider what you are going to look like in 20-30 years when the wrinkles and the sunspots start showing up, when you start investing your money in chemical peels and Botox. Your superficial need to be tan this summer will cost you years of younger skin. Don't be stupid!

After I establish a base early in the summer, I don't go cycling without waterproof SPF 30 sunblock. My favorite brand is Coppertone Sport. Comes in a blue bottle goes on dry (it isn't all oily and gross like some of them), and it will easily get me through a 4-6 hour ride.

I'm a type 1....red hair, freckles, irish decent.Type one: You burn easily, never tan, are red headed and have freckles, especially common among those of Irish, Scottish or Welsh descent.
Type two: You burn easily, but you get a minimal tan. You have fair skin and hair and blue eyes.
Type three: You sometimes burn, but can get a light brown tan. You’re dark-haired and Caucasian or Asian.
Type four: You minimally burn and usually tan to a moderate brown; more prevalent among Caucasians of Mediterranean descent or light-skinned people of African, Asian, Hispanic, Indian or Middle Eastern ancestry.
Type five: You rarely burn (lucky you!) and tan well. You are of Middle Eastern, Asian, Hispanic, Indian or African descent.
Type six: Your skin never burns and you’re sun insensitive. You are probably of African descent with deep skin pigmentation.
But then it type 2 it says fair skin and blue eyes...that's me too.
I already know I'm prone to skin cancer but...
My grandfather on my dads side had 2 heart attacks so far..he is like 70. His 2 brothers seem OK tho. My uncles on his side are only late 40's early 50's.
On my moms side her dad died on his 7th heart attack at like age 60'ish. His 5 brothers all died of heart attacks around the same time. His oldest son (my uncle) has had one, he is maybe 60. My mom and her other brother have heart murmurs....they are like 52 and 49.
I even had a 2 yr old cousin die of heart failure.
Knowing that...why would skin cancer scare me? Or heaven forbid wrinking in my old age....I hope noone looks in my urn and sees my wrinkles lol.

I generally don't tan by just laying around outside. Even if I had the time I'd probably go batshit crazy laying around doing nothing. I work outside a lot, and I get pretty tanned doing that. I wear heavy sunblock because I'm fair skinned and burn easily but this year I've wound up with a pretty good tan.
I'm not going to avoid the sun and live indoors during the summer just so I don't age prematurely.

I think the younger genration is slowly starting to shift away from thinking being a tan banana is cool. EQ and the rest of the PC gameworld are a big part of helping to keep kids out of harmful UV rays!

I'm a type 2, blue eyes, fair skin. I always burn first, then it can develop into a tan later.
I have had maybe 5 bad burns in my life. The worst happened in grade 9, when I went to a water park. Even though I applied lotion several times, I still got burnt bad... so bad that I couldn't even walk up the stairs. I ended up with tan lines that lasted for 2 years.
Because cancer runs in my family, I don't go out to purposely bake in the sun. If I do get burnt it's just carelessness on my part while out swimming or whatever.

I rarely burn and am usually fairly brown before Apr, if it ever goes away from the previous year. I don't intentionally lay in the sun, I like to fish offshore and have to do yardwork
Long sleeve T shirts and a goofy canvas hat keep most of the sun off me. SPF 30 takes care of my hands and legs.
UV Forecast is nearly always "extreme" on the weather channel for my area, imagine that

I used to ski a lot and would get the raccoon eyes from bright days up at the mountain. The worst, however, was summer skiing and getting the tan lines that went from the bottom of my shorts to the top of my ski boots. Looked completely retardedAslanna wrote:Ever get a sunburn on your face while wearing sunglasses? That sucks muchly!
These days, I am obsessive about high SPF, sunglasses and wearing a hat to cover my face from the sun. I'm not so compulsive about the rest of my body, though I will avoid burning as best I can - I do like to spend time outside in the summer.

The worst was when tanning beds first became mainstream, you'd see people walking around with the goggle outlines around their eyes.
I confess to loving the sun, on an early summer afternoon there is nothing more relaxing to me than sitting outside with a good book for a couple of hours. I am careful not to overdo and use lots of lotion. I'm a type 4, a nice golden bronze atm.

Burn? Whats that? I guess I am lucky in that sense. I can sit in the sun all summer long and only get darker and darker. I dont use the lotions for tanning except when I want to get darker fast for some event, then I use crisco oil or just plain water and let it dry off, then jump back in the pool rinse and repeat.

I dated a girl in High School who would get tan lines after being in the sun for 15-20 minutes, easy. I always thought that was pretty sexy to see her tan lines. She also had really fine hair and only needed to shave her legs every 2-3 weeks. She was an enigma. Too bad she was extremely boring. She had a lot of great and unique physical attributes going for her.
