Woman accuses Bryant of sexual misconduct

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

DENVER -- Prosecutors are considering whether to file charges against Kobe Bryant after a woman accused the Los Angeles Lakers' star of sexual misconduct at a hotel near Vail.

Bryant, 24, was released after turning himself in Friday and posting a $25,000 bond on suspicion of felony sexual assault, the Eagle County sheriff's office said Sunday.

The woman, who was not identified, told sheriff's deputies on Tuesday that Bryant sexually assaulted her the previous night in a hotel in the Edwards area. No other details were released about the case, which has been sealed by a judge.

The Denver Post reported Monday that Paul Pastoor, general manager for the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera, confirmed that Bryant stayed at the Edwards hotel. Bryant, who was not available for comment, was in the area to have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic.

"Kobe is innocent," Bryant's Denver-based lawyer, Pamela Mackey, told the Los Angeles Times. "Can you imagine being accused of this? It's awful."

After a series of interviews and a review of the physical evidence, investigators met with representatives for District Attorney Mark Hurlbert and concluded they had enough evidence for the felony sexual assault count, the sheriff's office said.

Hurlbert said Sunday night he hadn't made a decision on whether to file charges and had not yet seen the arrest report.

He said the sheriff's office asked a judge for an arrest warrant instead of requesting one through his office, the usual practice. In Colorado, police officers can make an arrest on suspicion of a crime but only the district attorney's office can file charges.

"It's very distressing that the sheriff's office, who is supposed to be conducting the unbiased investigation, ignores what the district attorney says and goes out and gets a warrant," Mackey said. "It's outrageous."

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak issued a statement Sunday.

"These allegations are completely out of character of the Kobe Bryant we know," Kupchak said. "For the seven years he's been with us, he has been one of the finest young men we've known and a wonderful asset to both our team and our community.

"However, since this is a legal matter being handled by the authorities in Colorado, we must refrain from further comment at this time."

Similar support, and similar silence, also came from Nike.

"We're pleased to work with Kobe Bryant as he is a great player," Nike spokesman Nigel Powell told ESPN.com. "But since this is a legal matter, we cannot comment at this time."

Bryant recently signed a five-year endorsement deal with Nike believed to be worth more than $8 million per year.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league had no immediate comment.

Since entering the NBA straight from high school, Bryant has drawn comparisons to the league's greatest players.

Despite early struggles -- he airballed three jumpers during the waning moments of the Lakers' series-ending loss to Utah in the Western Conference semifinals his rookie season -- Bryant quickly established that he was deserving the hype.

He was a star when Los Angeles won three consecutive titles from 2000-02 and was the MVP of the 2002 All-Star Game.

Bryant was the NBA's second-leading scorer last season, averaging a career-best 30 points. He scored 40 or more points in nine straight games in February and also had career-high averages of 6.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists.

When the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by San Antonio, Bryant wiped away tears as he left the court. "I hate this feeling, I don't ever want to feel it again," he said.

Along with that determination, Bryant has often shown dignity and heart many fans feel are missing from other NBA stars. He also speaks fluent Italian, scored 1080 on his SATs and is blessed with a camera friendly smile.

He married Vanessa Laine in April 2001. The two met on the set of a music video where Laine was working and got engaged while she was still in high school. Laine gave birth to their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant, in January. Bryant wore his hospital ID bracelet in a game the day after his daughter was born.

"I'm excited to play basketball, but to be honest, I really didn't want to leave," he said. "I did not want to take my eyes off her and my wife."

I'm not a big fan of Kobe...but I would have to agree this is way out of his character. For a guy that does not drink...I can't buy this. If for some reason he decided to start drinking, then maybe...but still doubt it.

Even if he is innocent , this has basically thrown a bad mark on to his character.

Same shit happened to Jerome Bettis this past offseason. Sounds disgustingly like someone's attempt to cash in at the expense of an athelete. The real down side to some of these type of allegations is that it makes people distrust legitimate claims of assault.

Disclaimer: I believe no means no, etc etc, rape is a serious crime.
But what the heck do you go up to a hotel room for with a rich sports star if not to have sex? Some chit chat? His stamp collection?

Zam, I think it's a bit early to be professing guilt. It's not like there aren't people out there that would like to scam money from someone who's rich.

If he's exonerated, I think it does nothing for his reputation.

Why the fuck do these damn articles always bring up his l33t SAT scores? 1080? Is that really supposed to be impressive even after considering the stupid athlete sterotype? Do these retard columnists honestly think that this makes him smart?

My 6 year old niece could fucking score a 1080. Wow....he grew up a few years of his life overseas (while young and the most ideal time) and learned how to speak another language! How fucking brilliant he is!

PS: David Robinson scored a 1320 on his and Dikembe Mutumbo speaks 5 languages fluently.

There is enough evidence to convict him, supposedly. I personally don't think he is guilty. I just really, really, really, hate Kobe Bryant, and laughed my ass off when I read this in the NY Post today.

Hmmm you dont think he is guilty but you want him to suffer the pain and humiliation of a trial?

Something is wrong there.

According to the article you cited, the sheriff’s office believes there is enough evidence to warrant an arrest.

However, instead of requesting an arrest warrant though the D.A., they used a provision of the Colorado law that allows them to request a warrant directly, thereby circumventing the D.A.

The D.A. hasn’t filed charges yet.

Sounds kinda fishy.

Plus, I agree with Kluden. Although I do not know Kobe personnally, it does seem far out of character for him considering the public image he portrays.
The statement below is true.
The statement above is false.

He said, she said.

Can anyone say Gold-Digger?

I hate basketball so I could care less either way but I don't think this fits Kobe's image that much.

What the fuck?
He hasn't even been arrested yet.

I doubt they even have enough evidence to file charges against him.

Uhh, yes he has been arrested. He turned himself in after enough evidence was present to file charges against him, although none have been charged yet. He also posted the 25k bond to get out of jail.

He probably paid that out of his wallet, on site, btw.

I don't believe the charges. But if an angel like Mike Tyson can fall from the good Lord's grace, I don't know what to believe anymore.

He might have been arrested, there might have been a warrant issued for his arrest, but the state has not decided on taking this to court yet (file charges). Information gathered by various news agencies is making it look like the evidence does not prove the possible charges. I always thought there had to be charges against you to be arrested...but hey...I've never gone through it, so I only know what Law and Order taught me.

"He said Bryant might not be charged at all, but he declined to discuss details of the allegations against the five-time NBA All-Star."

Lets just hope Dikembe is comprehensible in his native language. I think people throw out the mega languages known kudos too quickly! I do respect Dikembe's ability to take players out of the game with elbow shots to the head though.

If anyone listens to Jim Rome talk radio, the topic has been how Kobe can't sell shoes because he's a goodie goodie. I think this is all a ploy to give him a bad rep so he can sell shoes!

An article in the NY Post today says that Nike and other sponsors might drop Kobe from their endorsements. Looks like he might not be selling shoes after all.
