My little brother and dad both started playing. I tried it for a week or two and couldnt figure out how to work everything LoL Then once I figured it out I was hooked I left for collage. A year and a half later I ran out of money and had to get a job leaving tons of free time.
I bought my own account, my dad became a Guide and it looked like fun whenever I would visit him so I did too. They have both since quit but I am still enjoying it.

I was just curious, for my group of friends, I was the guy that tried it out and got others into it. I started playing around release and a few weeks later got my RL best friend into it and then around kunark release another close friend of mine joined in.
My RL best friend didnt quit til recently (he played from around release to May of this year and only had a 52 druid and 51 monk) cause he eventually just got bored with EQ, he played twinks of every class and just said fuck it.
My other friend quit a long time ago...5 times...he could make an account, get to lvl 20, get pissed off and run his character into Neriak (and in the case of his DE necro, into Felwithe), then cancel the account and break his CD. A few weeks later he would buy another CD \ Account and start all over again (his parents are rich rich rich).

I was waiting for a game like EQ forever. I used to love the little text games on BBS's back in the day, but I was looking for something more graphical and real-time.
I waited for Diablo for 2 years....it wasn't what I was looking for when it finally came out...I read about that through a magazine.
I waited forever for UO to hit the shelf, maybe 2 years also....I hated it....people would kill me for the rocks I had in my backpack using power they got from macroing skills etc...it was such a cheap ass game. I found out about UO because I ran across the web site accidently, I didn't get into beta for it though.
I heard about EQ through Claritin I think, which is my twin brother...but he might have heard about it through Kylere or Corona. But again this was way before public release so we had to wait a long time until me and Claritin got into beta 3, my little brothers couldn't get in until Beta 4...

I heard about EQ about 2-3 months before it was released. To me it was described as a graphical MUD. I loved playing MUDs back at that time, and I had never really heard of games like Ultima Online, so to me EQ was the first game of it's kind, and I knew I had to buy it. I waited and bought EQ during the first week of it's release, only to find that it ran so slowly because of my computer that it was impossible to play. So, seeing how I couldn't take the CD back, it got buried under all my other PC games.
A few months later I heard of a game called Asheron's Call, and also heard it had lower system requirements, so I got into beta and played it for quite a while, and then quit a month after it was released because I was totally bored of it, but I was in love with MMORPGs by then. By this time it was late 1999, and I had a new computer. One day I saw my EQ CD sitting there, and I decided to try it again, I found it ran great on my new PC, and like they say the rest is history.

I played Magic while I was living in Phoenix, AZ. I was playing at a little game shop one night (I think it was in July 1999) and saw one of my acquaintances playing a level 12 high elf cleric in unrest.
I was immediately intrigued as he began explaining it. I spent the next month researching it online, looking through message boards, screenshots, class descriptions, etc.
In September I moved back to Michigan, where my family was, and showed my brother a couple SS's. He told me that a few friends of his already played, so we went out and bought it, and began playing on Veeshan because one of his friends already had a level 20 magician.

I got into the beta test, phase 3. My first char was a high elf wizard, Palamides. I got to level 3 and saw an Erudite outside Felwithe with this PHAT red robe on. It was explained to me that they could be purchased in Erudin. I took the boat to Freeport and ran across all of Antonica without dying, and made it to Erudin. I still don't know HOW I did it - I just followed roads and somehow made it through Beholder's. Was quite an achievement for a noob, rofl. I bought a robe and then went back to Qeynos and farmed to get the money to buy the Gate spell and get back to freeport.
Later I met Jereth, the wood elf bard. He knew FoH. He became Karanis, the half elf cleric, in final. I followed him to Veeshan after playing Xegony in beta 4 with a close friend. Palamides, the gnome wizard, was born. Joined FoH along with Karanis.

My husband and I used to be in a TFC clan with Imster and Kargyle. They kept telling us we should try it out so my husband bought it. I watched him play and shrugged it off as boring...it wasn't as exciting as a FPS. I then broke down and decided to try it out with him and that's when my first character was created. A human monk named Leighloo Multipass. I think I put all her starting points in strength or something really stupid.

Some RL friends that i played Quake with told me to buy it. I bought and have not played another on line game since.
A bunch of us all started at about the same time, and some still even play.
Enyil aka: Thalak back then (GoV)
Broog (GoV)
Skunki
not his first char
(retired)
Those were the days. When every zone was something new and a scary adventure.

Played a lot of NWN, well 3 months anyway. I got my charge bill that month and it was about $120 so I quit but I always liked the idea of the game, just couldn't afford hourly charges the way I played. Stared at the Meridian box no less than 10 times but kept passing on it. Never could stand Ultima so I passed on UO. Then I stared at the eq box much in the same way I did the Meridian box. Probably the third time reading it, I gave it a go.
